91 LS400 4.0L V8 1uz got for 800 dollers
going into:
1984 Celica Supra 5mge (5 speed now used to be auto)

first off ill be driving the ls400 for a few months because its freakin comfortable, and i will need time to buy some parts...

correct me if i am wrong,
its a 91, so it will NOT have the oil pan i need??

i will need to a buy a bell housing for my w58 to bolt up??

motors mounts need some TLC

and flywheel??? do i use the 1uz flywheel and clutch??

and im sure ill have do do some wiring.

thanks for patience, i dont plan on jumping into this right away, i will be researching while i find parts for this build over the next several months.

05-01-2011, 02:38 PM
Oil pan will be fine (my engine is 91 Ls400). I recommend mounts from Cruzida (Peewee) in Australia. There are adapters to modify and use the 1UZ auto bellhousing with a W58, or you can buy a whole new bellhousing. Exhaust will be an issue, as the LS400 Manifolds won't clear the steering. They can be turned forward by rewelding the flanges, however, if you intend to turbo.

05-01-2011, 05:31 PM
You need tu use the Ring gear of the UZ to mount it on a Flywheel, or get a Flywheel who already had it.

For the motor mounts,, if you have a welder and some imagination and common sense nothing cant be done.

You'll have some fun with the wiring.

05-03-2011, 05:47 PM
thanks for replys.
i got a few friends with welders that will be the easy part.

wiring im not so good with so that will take some time.

but i am more interested in knowing if all the links for purchasing the bell housing and flywheel online are still active and if they are reliable???

thanks, i will try and use my 91 oil pan!!!

first thing is before i start pulling the engine i have to get this thing running.
somebody who i shal not name obviously has no idea how to time a vehicle.

so right now im looking at:
timing belt
camshaft and crankshaft seals
valve cover gasket
distributor caps and rotors
plug wires
vacuum lines
and a new radiator, the stock platis one has blown and some tool tryed to fiberglass it back together, and it looks like puke...:SM130 (1):

This thread may help answer some of your questions: http://www.celicasupra.com/forums/showthread.php?41148-My-new-project

Please post up each step of the project as I am interested in doing one of these swaps myself. I have access to wiring diagrams for the LS400 and the Supra.

05-09-2011, 09:10 AM
where do i order the w58 conversion plate???
gona need to buy one soon!

still waiting on a repair manual for the 1uz lexus is supposed to mail it to my house.
then i can start on my timing belt and camshaft seals!

05-09-2011, 06:55 PM
quantumauto for all your 1uz-w58 needs!!

05-12-2011, 07:27 PM
im subscribing since i'm interested in this swap. i already bookmarked quantum-auto.com

06-19-2011, 11:31 AM
project has been on hold because i moved.
gona pay off my visa this month and buy the adapter plate.

in the mean time ill pull my 5m because im sure it ate a ring.
going to be stripping the interior as well...

the clutches at quantum auto seam expensive, has anyone tried an aftermarket non turbo 7m clutch? will it hold?? or should i just bust and get a really nice one

06-23-2011, 08:11 PM
A good one like act should hold up forever in a lightweight car like a mk2. I'd stay away from shit like center force, xtd, or spec.
You can also get longer grade 10 flywheel bolts and use the flex plate and spacer in between your flywheel and crank and get the 2j/3s/3V whatever flywheels ring gear machined off

07-17-2011, 11:34 AM
putting everything back together today!
got injector seals yesterday. ill start there...

07-17-2011, 08:11 PM
What kind of clutch did you decide on?

08-25-2011, 11:06 PM
where to find engine mounts, i did not see any on quantum auto. and i dont have time to make my own.

08-26-2011, 11:33 AM
Here you go:

08-28-2011, 03:11 PM
thank you.

08-30-2011, 04:48 AM
what clutch did u decide to use?

ma67 lover
09-04-2011, 04:13 AM
just did new plugs and wires on my friends 1uz, what a crappy job haha 5 of the boots at the end of the wires got stuck at the bottom but a good ole coat hanger helped me get them out! 3rd cly wire was grounding out in the middle of the wire and now runs so much better! Best of luck on the swap!

09-19-2011, 07:38 AM
i am probly going to wire brush and paint my w58 tonight. waiting on my adapter plate and money.
then gona order my clutch line kit and slave cylinder from quantum.
gona buy some more stuff for the 1uz ign. soon as i can aswell.

got up early and finished sanding and painting.
still waiting for parts

10-08-2011, 08:09 PM
my adapter plate came a few days ago. and i ordered up the flywheel.
gona get the engine in the car soon for a fit test.
have decided to ditch the efi, and go with a carb.
i will have updates on a manifold and carb setup within a few months

11-12-2011, 02:11 PM
having troubles figuring out ignition. so far its looking like twin edis8 coil packs and a 36-1tooth crank gear.
ive been reading johnc's post's and i can't find what plug leads he used he just says 8mm mustang leads, so i assume 90's 5L.
can anyone point me in the right direction. for now im just surfin google lookin for answers

11-12-2011, 02:34 PM
this is basically what im getting to..

11-13-2011, 01:52 AM
I think I still have a trigger wheel for an EDIS8 set up that I got in a group buy here a few years back. I'll have to dig it out of the parts shelf. Can't remember if it's for 1UZ or 7M...

11-13-2011, 03:29 PM
Megasquirt can handle either: #1 A twin dist setup triggered by the 36-1 wheel. Or #2 A twin Edis 8 triggered by the Edis wheel. However, MS can also handle other types of crank trigger wheels, doesnt HAVE to be edis. Its your choice.

what other options do i have?
can MS be used without an ecu?

11-15-2011, 12:42 AM
Never mind. The link you posted referenced megasquirt, but you are going carbureted. My bad.

12-07-2011, 07:48 PM
Why would you go do a carb? You could get that car running on stock efi in a day easy. These engines respond very well to even low levels of boost. Easy with basic upgrades to the stock fuel system.

I think you are severely limiting your performance options performance by going with a carb. But it's your project. Good luck. Look forward to seeing it running.

the ones i sold for the 5m/6m/7m will bolt to the 1uz. it only has 2 bolt holes though, not 4. however idk if the diameter is right to clear the pulley. iirc someone told me it worked fine. and if ti bolts on, he would only need 1 edis8 module and 1 set of edis 8 coilpacks, which is comprised of 2 edis4 4 post coils. though he can use 8 ford cop coils and wire the matching pairs in series. mustang guys do it all the time. 2 coils on 1 output. negative of the first goes to the poisitive of the 2nd. positive of the first goes to +12v, neg of 2nd goes to the trigger on the edis8. otherwise, read the ms extra site and do the mods needed to run the stock 1uz dual distributor setup.

12-07-2011, 09:04 PM
i love Fuel injection, and i know lots about it. i am willing to spend more on a big in-effieciant carb that sucks gas...
if you dont like it please dont post...

PS if anyone has a 36-1 tooth crank gear i will buy it, i don't exactly care if i have to customize, as long as the outer diameter is what i need.

12-08-2011, 01:35 AM
Never said I don't like it. I like it when people do what they want with their cars. Just trying to find out why you are doing it.

12-08-2011, 07:20 AM
i like carbs. plus i really dont like the manifolds on the efi. looks like an abortion.

12-08-2011, 08:50 AM
then why not install the itb setup on it and keep efi? itll make more power and be more reliable.

01-14-2012, 08:46 PM
test fit.

thanks quantum auto!

also picked up an edis8 module sensors and crank gear with all wiring needed, now im thinking i want individual coil packs, no plug wires, any one know where i could find these???

02-04-2012, 10:26 AM
i recently got an adapter for my oil filter just like this:

whats the best filter relocation kit available for the 1uz??? or know the sizes and fitting names i need? braided lines would be nice :) thanks in advance for replys.

02-25-2012, 11:17 AM
ordered up my quartermaster slave cylinder tody #721-100 it ended up being 208 plus shipping.
i still have not picked out a clutch, savin it for last.

carb. manifold, coil packs next.:zzzzz:

03-06-2012, 10:37 AM
So how bout that carb manifold? Bit of a dead end there or jsut realized it's not an intelligent way to go?

still on the go...

03-09-2012, 08:43 AM
wow power steering was so easy to hook up...
all i need is a piece of hose to hook up my cooler into the return line.
also got my slave cylinder.
??has anyone drilled holes through the side instead of top to use there stock clutch soft line??

so im waiting for a friend to get a bender so we can fabricate our own manifold for a carb setup. a dual carb setup would be an option with the lower 1uz manifold. i was also thinking of making custom headers aswell for drivers side.

03-20-2012, 08:15 AM
picked up a an oil filter adapter yesterday with fittings just hose needed.

i am in the process of making headers as well... i have not done a build thread yet... i will when they are done. i am putting a 1uz into the ra64. i bought a cheap set of tundra headers, and a 3TC header for the donor material. i have alot of bends and straights to work with.

please post pics of the headers as you go along...

04-04-2012, 08:48 PM
will do.
as for an update on carbs. i am saving for 4 weber IDF downdraft carbs:

04-12-2012, 09:51 PM
quad double barrel downdraft carb set up? sounds siiiiick. I don't feel EFI is more reliable. Over the years my strongest engines have all been carbed

04-16-2012, 08:31 PM
ive been having a hard time finding a large enough primary venturi for the 1UZ on IDF's or IDA's. I think this is why i was thinking of a demon carb a year or two ago. The largest i see in the weber manual is 45mm main choke which would get you to about 7700 rpm, any more than that and your looking at different carbs. Might I suggest a 4 x 48 DCO/SP cross plane intake? 48 DCO with 46mm choke gets you to 8000, or a 55 DCO can be tuned between 8000-9000 rpm. my understanding is that th IDA's will give you better mid but choke at the very top end, where the 55 DCO's will have less mid range but breath fully at the redline.

04-19-2012, 09:17 AM
Here is the link to the build of mine... i have started some of the headers...

04-19-2012, 10:31 AM
your headers are lookin beautiful. i like your idea of removing the cross member and rack.ill be watching!

i like the idf's and ida's the most. but i have not decided if i want my power in the low rpms or high.do you got one of these by chance??: http://www.ebay.ca/itm/WEBER-CARBURETORS-TUNING-GUIDE-IDA-DCNF-DCOE-/400255712927?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_100&hash=item5d31197e9f
so far 44mm idfs are whats available in my price range.

04-19-2012, 02:33 PM
Hey man I got my carbs from Steve at Top End Performance, next time i buy carbs though ill find a VW dune buggy shop in vic and see if they have competitive pricing. ill try some pics...

04-19-2012, 02:36 PM
I should note that Steve at TEP is a great guy good service and communication and gave me a bit of a deal on the carb prices. Just far away is all..

I should note that Steve at TEP is a great guy good service and communication and gave me a bit of a deal on the carb prices. Just far away is all..

if you say so ill check some prices out there. nothing is too far away for my supra, where is TEP located?? ill just google them.

Hey! I got a 1UZ so I'm cool now tooo! Love that pic of the intake manifold off makes me think of how a demon carb will fit on there :) Have to say i really like this engine. Smooth and potent. any progress? Hey I have a full set of new calipers and rotors and pads if you need? also many more supra parts id like to send to a good home

07-18-2012, 07:56 AM
progress is slow ive been saving to get my drivers liscence back (why can't i spell that word:duh:)

you gona 1uz your supra?? what are you doing with your 7m?? i will buy it... without the carbs that is.
you going to efi or carb your 1uz?? let me know!

03-11-2013, 04:21 PM
I'm digging my old thread out of the grave. My 1uz carb. Project is coming out and going on the stand for fabrication. I just purchased a complete 92 1uzfe a/t wiring and ecu. Plan using it stock. With w58. Trying to sell my truck so I can spend time and money on this...

What was wrong with the old one???

03-14-2013, 09:13 AM
What was wrong with the old one???

i couldnt get it to start think there was somthing wrong with the ecu or the MAF. it wont be going far. ive got plans for it.

thats all i did today. dash will go back in tomarow. i dont care for heat. i have a truck and this car will never see winter. so all that stuff is going in a box and getting stored.

03-15-2013, 03:28 AM
Was it your decision to go carb that caused you to get a no start??? Just wondering, because I would imagine that would be a big factor in this build...

Was it your decision to go carb that caused you to get a no start??? Just wondering, because I would imagine that would be a big factor in this build...

when i got the engine it had a blown up rad, both tps had been removed, the rubber on the maf was gone, and the ecu was on the seat. everything with a carb starts. it would probly fart right now if i jammed a rag with gas in it and gave power to the starter...

03-15-2013, 09:58 PM
the panels for the dash were covered in rust. i can only assume condensation build up from over the years does this??

http://img21.imageshack.us/img21/9481/dsc00502kh.jpg (http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/21/dsc00502kh.jpg/)
i have a 92? lexus ls 400 manual but im not sure if it includes diagrams. so i need diagrams and ecu pinout. possibly a pinout for all the chassis plugs aswell. if any one has info i would greatly apreciate it. running without a trans in about a week or two is my goal. although i may be pooched without the chassis plug for the ecu...

03-18-2013, 10:56 PM
If this is anything like the 2JZ, you should be able to start that puppy up on the garage floor with only a few wires, to ensure shes a good runner!

03-19-2013, 12:45 AM
so what i think im looking at is one efi relay and a fuel pump ecu/ relay. power to igniters and coils, and injectors?? seems strange after reading the supra one forever.

03-19-2013, 01:11 AM
Sounds about right, hook everything up then tap the starter!

03-19-2013, 08:48 AM
so do you hook a pump up with it on the floor? help a noob out i thought these were pressurized fuel systems.

03-19-2013, 06:13 PM
Yup, electric fuel pump is just sitting in that jug with gas, thats actually the whine you hear before I tap the starter, hes hooking the power to the fuel pump.

03-20-2013, 11:35 AM
found what i need and it would apear that i have a 96? or possibly newer 1uzfe/ecu because it seems to match what i have for ecu connectors.
i do not have the 28 pin connector...
pins1-4 is my oxygen sensors.
Pin9 is ignsw
pin12 spdm goes speedo
pin14 is batt
pin22 is +B it will get power from my efi relay.
pin24 MREL goes to my efi relay

i think that should get me running when all is wired with the circuit open relay and efi relays. new pump, new battery, and of course after i power the starter connect all grounds, and power my coils ill get back with an update on the progress but i need a few things before i get started.

03-20-2013, 09:08 PM
You shouldn't need the o2 sensors for a startup, but its not gonna hurt either.

03-21-2013, 07:31 PM
got the engine in. almost finished my wiring just need add power to the ingiters/coils/injectors, and a few other odds and ends.
http://img825.imageshack.us/img825/1508/dsc00505dx.jpg (http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/825/dsc00505dx.jpg/)

it would apear these models did not come with egr. you can see the block off plate in the picture below.
http://img832.imageshack.us/img832/4971/dsc00511se.jpg (http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/832/dsc00511se.jpg/)
got the new pump in yesterday. sorting everything out as i go. just a little bit more wiring, and a few fuel line fittings and filter then its startup time.

Looking good dude! Hope she starts up on the first try for you.

03-23-2013, 01:39 AM
home stretch man!

03-23-2013, 11:36 AM
I've got some pics ill upload later. Had to take the engine back out and swap pans with my 91 1uzfe(same front sump) due to a fracture in the pan almost an inch 1/2 long. All sealed back up with squeez gasket. I'm happy I got to look inside. She was clean. No sludge or chunks of piston.

04-01-2013, 08:02 PM
the savage crack in the old pan.
http://img197.imageshack.us/img197/8900/dsc00519.JPG (http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/197/dsc00519.JPG/)
on to more interesting things. test fit trans.
http://img442.imageshack.us/img442/8136/dsc00529ox.jpg (http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/442/dsc00529ox.jpg/)
the 1uzfe/engine mount combo moves the w58 forward aprox. 3 inches.(billym's shift bushings installed...) best seen in this picturte:
http://img716.imageshack.us/img716/1117/dsc00530am.jpg (http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/716/dsc00530am.jpg/)
was looking at a bunch of w58 crossmembers i have and the best fit was definatly the stock one flipped around. i got 3 bolts the forth will need some metal added to the crossmember.
http://img191.imageshack.us/img191/4268/dsc00525yg.jpg (http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/191/dsc00525yg.jpg/)

thinking of getting a custom throttle cable made. the stock one is really short. it does not reach by a long shot.

04-02-2013, 02:23 PM
so here is a picture showing the 4th hole with no bolt in it.
http://img27.imageshack.us/img27/1170/dsc00531dz.jpg (http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/27/dsc00531dz.jpg/)
i don't have a whole lot of metal fabricating tools. a drill press would have been great for this. an 18volt dewalt is gona have to do though along with an angle grinder and welder.
http://img248.imageshack.us/img248/5194/dsc00532l.jpg (http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/248/dsc00532l.jpg/)
used the angle grinder to cut a piece of 1.5inch square stock. i kept the 90 degree bends on either side for strength.

If it was me I'd look at using a MK3 shifter housing and an auto transmission x-member.

If it was me I'd look at using a MK3 shifter housing and an auto transmission x-member.

w58s are rare around here right now. and i tryed the auto one. this will work for now though.

http://img407.imageshack.us/img407/7654/vg46.jpg (http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/407/vg46.jpg/)
using chimps steel braided mk2 clutch line and a brake adapter:

i also got around to mounting my oil filter and filling up the pan.
http://img35.imageshack.us/img35/16/0tsi.jpg (http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/35/0tsi.jpg/)
its mounted on the steel piece inside the bumper, its really the only place...

also i picked up a battery, fuel filter and the bolts for my drive shaft.

got her running, but first here is some goodies i picked up:

here is my open header start up:
it runs fine, but keep in mind my Oxygen sensors are not wired in yet... and its open header at the moment so it sounds like a drag car.
"excuse my filming im no Spielberg"

spent a day making my drivers side exhaust go forward and down beside the oil pan. not done yet... but i did get around to buying a muffler and 10 feet of 2.5 inch exhaust.
some good flames in the video... it hits the rev limiter really easy, bounces fast too!

I just have to ask you (reading over my old posts on this thread), where you able to start the 1UZ outside of the car???

09-08-2013, 10:18 AM
to be perfectly honest i didn't even attempt starting it on the floor. i just had a good feeling about it.

Awesome build. You really put some hard work into it nice to se! Any updates coming?

I have not done much work on the project at all. I did a little more exhaust work, it just needs the muffler welded on.
But I have not been able to make the clutch engage or disengage... I have bleed the damned units 4 times, I think it's just not reaching. I have to remove the diff, drive shaft, and trans. And shim the slave cylinder closer.
At the same time I've been eyeing up a kit ok eBay 450$ and I get a brand new bell housing that uses a fork, rather than the sealed unit I currently have installed.

04-28-2014, 09:13 AM
Did you use the 6061 spacer on the input shaft of the trans before sliding the slave on? The more popular option seems to be to use the T56 internal slave with the mounting plate that www.1uzfeswapkit.com sells. People seem to have alot more luck with reliability with that setup over the Quartermaster/Howe option.

Thanks for the links!
I really want to give this QM unit one more try though before I throw it out lol
Btw excessive manufacturing has a few new 1uzfe slave cylinder goodies

I finally got around to fixing my clutch issue. Clutch was aprox. 2"5/8 away from the block and the slave was 2"7/8. That 1/4 stopped it from disengaging.
It's all back together and moves!
Clutch feels great grabs really nice. The 1uz is great I scared the shit out of myself already in 4th going down a hill.
Update very soon!

im back!
kinda... no license until september 16th which gives me plenty of time to get a few more things complete before i decide to daily drive this bitch next summer :) .

last weekends project i tore into the oil filter re-locator plate (OFRP).
heres some pictures of my new OFRP:
and you can order up this baby here:
this piece was 80$(USD) PLUS shipping and border fees close to 120$(CAD) compared to the ebay one i got for 20$(CAD) plus shipping
you can see the comparison in quality for yourself here:
i have measured and it is twice the thickness and comes with bolts and a gasket.

overall very happy its not spitting oil out the side of the plate or the lines.

04-26-2015, 11:10 AM
i also wanted to relocate my battery to behind the passenger seat. i ended up buying the thickest welding cable i could find in two 8 ft lengths. of course i had to take all the manifold and efi off to change the starter cable...
Dirty :(
Clean :)
there it is... encased in plastic and frustrating as all hell to remove without removing the starter...
New cable beside old:

currently in the process of fabricating and welding a couple mounts on the floor for the battery.

very excited to work on the car more this summer, looking at new rubber engine mounts trans mounts, new exhaust, and steel braided power steering lines when the engine comes out for exhaust:) got an idea for aluminum switch board too :)
enjoy the pictures and hopefully this gives a few of you more options for your oil filter plate

GREAT build! So far I can only see hte pics on page 11 though, all other pages have a picture of a frog and says click here to discover image shack.... any ideas how I can see these awesome pics?! (without downloading image shack to my work computer)
