Has the stock toyota shifter always been able to play so much side to side? Other trannies I've owned/ driven (nissan truck, mitsu eclipse, escort, accord) Haven't had nearly as much free play.I can literally slide the bad boy over to where i shift into third horizontally (but not vertically, thank god.) is this common or has 20 years worn down something in there I'm not aware of?

Yup. More than likely you've worn down the white bushing that sits on the ball at the end of the shifter (can't remember what that ball is called.) I don't even have a bushing there anymore...so you can imagine how bad mine is. If I have it in gear, I can still wiggle it around as if it was in neutral.
Also, check the spring/retainer set up on the pivot ball. i've seen those bend and pop out.

Well, seems like no better to go about getting one of those short shifter kits then, well, if I don't sell my car tomorrow anyways :-) I'll miss her but the guy buying it is definitely gonna give everyone a run for their money after the work he wants to do to it!

The bushing is only ~10 from toyota dealer. It will make the shifter nice and tight..just like new. When I said yup, i didn't mean it's that loose when it was new.

Yea that's how i interpreted it. Good to know, the guy buying it will definitely want to pick that up. Is that bushing included in the short throw group buy going on right now by chance ?

You'll have to ask Jim about that, but IIRC it does come with everything.
