The aptly named, Suicide hose from HELL (AKA coolant bypass hose) just struck again! But this time it was on my buddy's RA60. At least ours is like 14" long, even if it is in a stupid place...the one on the 22-RE is a 5 inch long 90 degree bend. ICK! I improvised with heater hose that's kinked now, but it doesn't leak! Formed hose is 13 bucks from Toyota, special order, or course!

Just venting! Psssshhhttt!

Kay, I'm done.... :P

as a toyota technicain.... toyota really did agood job on making this coolant bypass hoses such a terriblenightmare for the 80's toyota vehicles

Yes, I've been stranded twice and had to limp home twice because of that damn hose.... Booooo Coolant bypass Hose. BOOOOO!

what excaly is this coolant line?

It's the mega-cocksucker hose undernearth the intake manifold, in the most impossible to reach location. It can be changed, but it's such a bitch to do...most people try to change it out BEFORE it fails.

what does it do? run coolant to the head from the block?

What it does is: before the thermostat opens, this hose allows circulation within the block. On the 5M, it runs from right under/behind the thermostat housing to under the #5 intake runner.... With gravity in working order, fixing a problem with this hose is a coolant shower/bath. Very pleasant.......where ever you happen to be when it strikes...

whats the point of having a thermo then?

having a thermostat is circulate the water to the radiator when the car is in optimum temperature so that your car DONT OVERHEAT

my thermostat got stuck closed a few days ago, causing the car to overheat massively, upon which I pulled it out and have been running w/o a thermostat ever since. It took 3 days for my new 180 degree t-stat to get in, which I will be putting in tomorrow.
W/o the thermostat, my temp gauge reads slightly above cold at warm operating conditions

So what can be done about this 'suicide hose' so that we NEVER EVER have to worry about it again?? I can tell you over that last 20 years I have blown several head gaskets because of it! Also the towing bill too!.

(THis hose blew last fall but head gasket is fine due to ARP. I pinned the needle in the red!)

Aaron! Make us a stainless steel suicide hose!!!!

lol!

I second that motion! I'd buy one!

Well, I haven't had much probs lately. NEW hose and DON'T put it in the metal clip on the side of the block.... The clip used to be plastic coated, but time takes care of that and then you have a rubber hose in an METAL clip vibrating all the time....

As with many things on the MKII, neglect is a killer.

i still dont get it. if it bypasses the thermo when the engine is cold then whats the point of having a thermo?

If this is the small hose that runs through the throttle body and the ISC valve, the best solution is to remove them entirely... I remove them on every motor I work on... 5Ms, 7Ms, 22RE, 1JZ, etc... Just cap off the nipple that goes into the head and the one on the coolant hard pipe. If you have the motor apart at all, best way to do it is weld them shut all together and never have to worry about it again.

so there is no point to it?

From all that I could ever learn about it from the few schooled techs I know and anyone else who I thought might have an idea - generally - production cars are made to serve a wide range of markets and climates - that is there for some freak of nature condition that could occur when it is below some certain degree out side, then your motor is hot and cools off - the condensation that could form could freeze and freeze the throttle body butterfly... or something along that line. For the ISC, some will argue that it needs the coolant temp to make proper adjustments - but when your motor is cold, the coolant is the same temp and it all will heat up when the motor gets up to temp (everything gets heat soaked anyway). I have done this to many, many cars - driven here year round in the northeast w/ no problems what so ever. I think it is about as dumb as could be to have 180+deg coolant flowing anywhere near the intake...

so why have a thermo?

having a thermostat is circulate the water to the radiator when the car is in optimum temperature so that your car DONT OVERHEAT

This hose allows coolant to circulate WITHIN THE BLOCK before the thermo opens. The POINT of having a thermostat is to include the radiator in the coolant circuit once it reaches a certain temp. This allows your engine to not overheat and to not run too cool.

This is not to be confused with the Throttle Body Coolant line. I've bypassed that as well and have had no problems (Such as icing...THAT's another thread) I never liked the idea of heating my TB...

The "suicide bypass hose" is just part of the loop that allows coolant to flow through everything but the radiator. Now, what happens when the circulating coolant gets hot??

It doesnt bypass the thermostat it is still on the engine side of things. It allows water to circulate through the engine when the thermostat is closed to avoid any hot spots in the block or cylinder head.

i get it now, its like 2 different ciruits, and the thermo connets the 2? the engine side and the rad side?
