So I just got my $700 car home today (Had to get a U-haul trailor to get it to my house) and the diff was pulled out of it a couple weeks ago when the motor blew. Reason for the previous owner to pull it out "it was making some noise" I guess it must have been pretty loud.

So I took it out of the trunk and set it on my work bench and started turning wrenches to the left.

Heh.. oops! forgot to take the lube out! hehehe... So I scratched my head a little and thought...

HEY! Why don't I look in my Chilton manual for Celica's and Supra's from 1971-85??

Looked through and it didn't cover LSD's... unless I'm blind... Anyway, now I'm going to look in the TSRM online...

P.S. Step one in the TSRM says: DRAIN OUT DIFFERENTIAL OIL

yeah, thats prolly the origonal fluid from when the car was new. get a 5 gallon bucket to put the diff in, dont put the aluminum cover in it. then fill it with purple stuff engine degreaser and let it sit overnight. then remove it and give it a good hose down with a high pressure hose.

Is "Purple Stuff" a brand name? I will look for engine degreaser at Shucks. Where's the best place to buy a True Trac? The Chimp wants $500 for one with carrier bearings... I'll probably just make this diff work until I've got more cash to buy a True Trac...

i forget the brand but they also make "green stuff" which converts rust. the "purple stuff" comes in a clear 1 gallon bottle and is purple with a purle labe. says formula something on it ~$6-7/ gallon. works great. dont get it on your hands, it will burn after a bit.

I bought some similar stuff in a one gallon container. The diff almost didn't fit in the 6 gallon bucket that I cleaned out. luckily the plastic bent under the weight of the diff. That thing is pretty heavy. Oh, and I found a couple little chunks of metal attached to the magnetic bolt in the diff housing...
