yikes, that's adding a fair amount of weight to an already moderately heavy wheel. why powder coating? can't see any reason to stay with the original finish, and just fix it up with some paste wax and elbow grease.

last time i inqured into it, powder coating isnt really much different than a proper paint job, weight wise.

powder coating will cost me about $25 nz per wheel
and wont take me hours of hard work to look nice.

if you are really unsure, you can always paint them to see how it would look, then if you like it, strip them and send them away.
but i think with the right color choice, they would look very nice with powdercoating done :)

I just got 6 wheels refinished and they used powder coating during the process. These are P type wheels and they look brand new. One of them even had a gash in it they filled and reworked.
The powder coating concerned me a little as it usually has a texture or finish that is dull, but these look fabulas. Great part about the powder coating is it is a tougher finish and better sealing over the standard issue clears.
No yellow or "hue" to it, just shinny aluminum where it is supposed to be and "as cast" in the other areas. Thumbs up.
Not sure why you want to change the color though??

What's the best way to get the brake dust that's stuck inbetween the spokes for our rims? I'm thinking some sort of powerful chemical and a scrub brush...

windecker, got any pictures? would love to see them. also, how much did this run you? i'd only be doing 4 wheels (no spare, atm) but it'd give me an estimate.

Regarding cleaning, not exactly sure as I keep mine pretty clean to avoid that exact issue. I would think that Autozone or what ever you have in your area would carry a good cleaner. I would be careful though as the clear coating is pretty thin on the stock wheels and harsh chemicals cause corrosion. I would suggest a very good rinse job when finished.
Regarding the pictures, I can get some and post them, give me a couple of days on that.
Transwheel.com for info on the wheel rebuilding. For a business the wheels are $104.00 each to refinish in sets of 4 which includes shipping back to you. They use powder coating and put it on thicker due to the corrosion issues discussed above. They will weld or fill defects to I think 3 inches at no extra charge. They warrant the wheel against corrosion for the life of the car once refinished.
If you like the stock wheels it is a great deal cause they look like new when done and less than 1/3rd the cost.
I took some from a parts car that really were rough along with some spares I purchased and they all look new now.
Note that welding in certain areas can cause blemishes, depends on where it is.
Basically they bead blast the whole thing, straighten warps or bends if able, put the "texture" back between the spokes and re-machine the face to put the shine back in. Dip it in chemicals for paint adhesion and powder coat it.
Hope this helps.

I would really like the face and lip to be polished aluminum then the underside where you cant see powdercoated gunmetal grey, and the black ribs repainted to really stand out. Nice lookin rims on a phat lookin ride makes all the ladies wanna jump in.
