just wondering if i could squeeze that in the back with a 17x7 or 8 up front... what exact offset would be needed? i know its 0-10mm but is there anything special to do to fit that big of a wheel? if it will fit i have found new wheels for our cars... 8)

I've had 265/40 and 275/40 tires on 17"x9.5" wheels in the rear with no issues. I think they called it a zero offset, but was actually ~5-6mm.

The rear wheel/tyre combination will be taller than the stock diameter. This of course will throw your speedometer off by ~12.24%. So at a spedomter reading of 100km/h you will actualy be travelling at 112 km/h.

The math
275/245=1.122444897.....
so a 12% difference

I've always stated that if you have 4.30 rear end and you would like to switch to a 3.73, but can't find one, just change your rear wheel diameter to a larger size. 3.73 is ~15% taller than a 4.30 ratio. So if you use a 4.30 rear end and a 275/40-17 tyre you should get close(3% off) to using a 3.73 with a 245/40-17 setup.

The math
4.30/3.73=1.152815013.....
so a 15% difference

The only issue with this is handling. The rear of the car will sit higher than the front. The car will have more understeer.

Does this make sense?

Pirelli used to make a 275/35-17 tyre, not anymore though. I don't think anyone makes one now. It would be nice.

I am aware of the effective gear change. That's part of why I want to try a 275/40. The other part is I want to try a 275 and the closest fit is 275/40. However, I have some excellent 255/40's now so I think I'll pass on the 275's.. :)

I believe that Pat Hipkins is running a 275/35-17 on his Introforged wheels, but...that's like the only tire he could find and he searched pretty hard IIRC.

275/35R17 is the larger "ideal" fitment.. Trouble is.. finding someone that still makes the tire. If you don't mind mixing and matching brands.. which is not considered optimum from a performance stand point then you're OK.

275/40R17 is way too tall.

Go with 265/40, there are some good mfg's out there for that tire size.

If I'm not mistaken 275/35-17 are available Europe not in North America.

When I convert to 5 bolt with the OZ Crown parts I have now I will be going 18". More tyre selection.

A brand new shiny Candian looney if you can find a North American distributor for 275/35 17s. I've looked for awhile and have found bupkiss. I did manage to find one Italian manufacturer that made tires in that size, but then you'd have to order them from Italy for a brand we've never heard of here. Also, out of curiousity (RabidMk2), what wheel manufacturer are you talking about?

Available in Europe, I checked some UK sites.

265/35-17

Dunlop SP SPORT 8000
Michelin Pilot SPORT

Maybe James Razor could setup a group buy for the people that want them? If he can order rims from Australia, why not tyres from the UK? It is closer after all.

Equivalent model tyres for the front should be easily available here.

If I'm not mistaken 275/40-17 are available Europe not in North America.

Go take a look at any late model Camaro/Mustang with stock tires and wheels.

With stiffer stock height rear springs, and lowered front with 235/45, it looks good imo. I prefer raked to dragging @ss with the wheels tucked at the top. (raked looks sweet on a Cressida also -- Sten's comes to mind).

275/40R17 is way too tall.

Yes, it is taller than stock (roughly an inch total), and a little more than 1/2 inch taller than the fronts (or the 255/40 rear size some use), but worked well for me with the taller (lower number) gears and spring height setup described above. I subsequently went with 265/40, which maybe looks a bit more even, and have another pair of these in the waiting, as they were a closeout on an awesome tire. I think money is better spent on the best compound/tire one can comfortably afford, rather than sheer width. Of course, having both is even better if you can.

I wouldn't recommend 275/40 with lowered rear as it would be way up the flare. However, given the proper offset, it would probably be OK functionally, except for induced speedometer error.

Jimi

That's what I was thinking. I too have a lowered front and stock height stiffer rear. 275/40 looks like it'd fit NOW, but not when I lower the rear again. I like the raked look too, but I miss the handling of the lowered rear. :)

Like I said, I'm loving these new 255/40 Proxes4 I got, and consequently, I don't have a need to go any wider. :) They are also waaay wider then my old Hankooks in the same size! HOORAY! :D

I have fitted 265/35/17 on the rear as I did not get the 10" rims in the end. I have 8" all round. Even so 275/35/17 is a really hard tyre to find and if you do get lucky you will need deep pockets.
My 265/35/17 Michelin pilot sports retail at around £220 each in the UK.
It's a good job I don't get much wheel spin anymore.
