My headlights this morning provided an interesting wink show on my way to work. It was dawn, so I had my running lights on. At my first stop, my headlights pop up, but are off. I turn my lights back off to try and make them go away, but they don't. So I turn them on, they come on and start going up and down on there own until they are nicely outa sync, one is up the other down. Turn them back off, the lights are off but they still do there show for a bit and finally tuck themselves away. I drive the rest of the way to work with the lights off , with them making the occasional show popping up and going back away.

Any idea what it might be? One door was left ajar overnight so the interior light was on. Mighta been short on juice, but seems unlikely. When I was stopped at work and tried them they weren't blinking at that time, but they were still coming up for just the running lights.

Try replacing the relay....mine used to just turn on whenever they felt like it, car off/car on doesn't matter.

Which relay and where is it?

In the fuse box, behind the battery.

Mine did that when the relay got wet from spraying out the engine bay. You kinda get that "Christine" thing goin on when the car is off. You may also want to check the relay between the drivers rear wheel and the door jamb. I think the 85 and 86's had them there. Mine got nasty and that kept my lights from comming on.....they would pop up but not come on. Just a thought.

Last evening, and this morning everything was working as normal again. We have been getting an extra dosage of rain, more then this car has seen in a long time. When I looked seemed to be fairly damp(water had pooled) around the connectors for the lights etc.

So far looks like water was causing something to short out... I should be good until the next heavy rain. =)

Check your head light wires. On my 82 the wires were so stiff, from heat and age, that the insulation was cracking . And from the headlights opening finally broke the wire. I rewired both sides and had no problems since.

A rewire is the way to go. But you can use rubber cement/electrical tape of to insulate and waterproof them as a short term solution.
