OK
So I am leaving a service call lastnight around 7:45pm going down this really crappy cottage road that takes quite a while. I Finally get to the main road that takes me to the highway and home, this is a very fun road to drive lots of twisties so I have been looking forward to it.
I head into the first corner in 3rd and I break a bit before entering... my Dash likes disaperars... then it comes back but apparently I am doing 0rpm
Huh thats weird I think to myself, and continue about ym marry way.
A couple more corners and more weird dash problems, I am getting a bit concerned now cause suddenly its reading an empty tank of gas were it said there was a 1/2 tank before. My temp gauge keeps shifting positions (luckily I have installed a temp gauge and temp is about normal for my car)
I make it to the highway with further incidents, I turn on my turn signal to make my turn to the highway and the dash is flashing out of control like I'm at the Con of the Enterprise during a fire fight and its taken a critical hit (best explination I can think of for what happended, and yes I know I'm a geek)
I make my turn and turn off the signal, all is normal for a while, then I hit a bump and it all went out and back again.
Its getting dark so I turn on my headlights... big mistake dash freaks out again star trek style. So back to running lights and foggs for now cause I realize that combination seems to work as long as I don't use my breaks.
I figure about halfway home to try turning off my fogs, turning on my headlights and see what happens. Well thats seems to work so I start to wonder if my fog light mod is malfunctioning but its kinda weird it would do it now becuase I did the mod two years ago. Then I hit my breaks and the dash went out again....
So this continues the rest of the way home. This morning I had no issues on the way to work I am kinda stumped.
I did recently wire in oil preasure and water temp gauges. However they are on my car sterios power and when they short/ground out, it just blows the fuse and only effects my sterio.
Any Ideas would be appreciated.
Thanks
Carl
I've had this exact problem.
Mine was caused by poor connections to the battery.
Take the battery connectors off, both of them, and clean the connectors and battery posts.
Worked for me.

Thanks for the quick reply Ross. I should mention that about 3-4 weeks ago I replaced my my Alt with a new one and at that time I put new new terminal ends on my battery cables and some new ground wire. I will check to see if that is the problem, but like i said thats mostly new now.
Thanks again
Carl

Is your battery tied down good? Since this started during hard braking and cornering, something probably shifted somewhere. That light show sounds pretty neat. If you can't figure it out, trade dashes with Phoenix. A Star Trek dash is close to a Knight Rider one. 8) j/k you know

Dads supra had a similar issue, make sure you have good earths. We added 2 new earths, just to be sure, and it did the trick.

I'm guessing 'earths' is aussie for 'grounds'
What are the positives called down under?

Yeah, Europeans call it the earth connection too. Sort of logical. If you're on this planet the ground will always be the earth.

Hey All,
I replaced all my earths on my MA61 so my dash doen't black out as often as well as replace the battery and alternator to elimiate the problem. All is good now. It's better then my friends old MA61 where it would read in Miles Per Hour every now and again (For you Americans, Australian Spec Dashes didn't have an option to swap between Kph & Mph).
Cheers.

If you have a Haynes Manual, doen't it have an American Translation to English Translation of the automotive terms?
Also battery brackets are still avaliable from Toyota (America). I got mine ordered from Australia using the American Part Number and it cost me AUD$28.50
Cheers.

You're j/k, right? I've never had a strap on my battery. Never had any problems. What sort of terrain have you got? My cables do need to be replaced though, as do all my grounds/earths. I wonder if there is a list of them all somewhere in the tsrm??Hmmm :?

Another thought is to check that you havnt had a water leak above the fuse box in the kick panel......mine did this and corroded the contacts in there causing al sorts of weird things to happen, including the digi dash to go all funny at times...

No I am not joking, He drove around without a battery holder on top lol. Where I am in Victoria, its flat in most places, and the only way to move the battery I suppose is being stuck in rush hour traffice from stop starts. After I saw the bloke with no battery holder, I vowed to find a spare battery strap so mine doesn't move, and reenforced the old one.
Back to the thread, cruiser is on to something, check all the grounding/earth points on the car to see if it is not corroded.
Cheers

Holly post whores Batman!
Anyway while my battery is still lose I have only had the probelm a few more times, and not when driving hard. But when I turn on the heat becuase I have a bit of a cooling problem I vent at full power through the defrost this makes the whole dash quite hot and thats when the electronics start to fizzle in and out.
Pretty weird but I assum ein the winter when you would normally have the heat on the heat is not as hot and the rest of the black is not pre-baked from sittin gin the sun.
