The release button on my parking brake has fallen apart. Now the brake won't hold in the up position.

The brake still functions, it just won't click and stay up anymore. I can see the spring inside the handle.

Any ideas? Thanks!

Replace the whole parking brake leaver from another MA61 or xA6x Celica as I believe they are the same (In Aust anyway)...

Cheers.

.....Or you could just go to a junkyard and get the button for free. That's what I did. Anything that fits in you pocket is free at junkyard, right??LOL

For those who want to have a functional emergency brake until they can get the necessary stock part(s)...take a hollow spacer (metal or plastic) and insert it into the brake handle. The total length of the nut and the spacer, should be about the length of the original button. Spacer has to be small enough to fit into handle but larger diameter than the spring inside the handle. Then just assemble with that appropriate sized metric nut. That's what I did and it is still that way after a year and a half. Works perfect. And the threads don't stick out at all. It is comfortable to use just like the button.

Have fun,

If you want it to work until you get the new button just pull the brake all the way up and put your finger where the gear that holds the brake is at and you should feel a piece of metal that is just dangling if you push that it will stay up.

Here is a beautiful diagram:

Or, just spend $4.00 at the dealership, get the button and a new spring and you'll have no more problems! These items are still in stock for most colors, and if they don't have your color, get a black button, nobody will really notice it!
I used a vice grip on the rod sticking out of the handle for 2 months before I finally got irritated enough to buy the parts. I thought it was going to be a month before they'd come in and cost me 20 or 30 bucks, but $4.00 and 1 day later, I had it installed and haven't had to screw with it again!

Thanks guys, the part came in today. Works great!

Parking Brake Knob (Black) [46217-10020-11]
$3.48

UPDATE: I also picked up a spare one from an early 1990's Toyota Tercel at the salvage yard. They appear to be identical.
