transmission won't shift when i start

On my 84 ptype when i start the car in neutral and try and shift to any gear it won't go into gear. But if i start the car in any gear in will let me shift normal and switch to any other gear. what could cause this and what do i need to do to fix this.

With auto, shouldn't be able to start the car in "any gear". I admit, this one's got me puzzled. I assume you mean the clutch is engaged when you start the car in neutral but disengaged obviously when you start in "any gear". But otherwise shifts fine? Only thing that comes to mind is something to do with the synchros but I don't know enough about the inside of the gearbox to say.
