Porting a 7MG head - OST-022: New Numbers

Some of you know me by reputation, I've been porting 4AG heads for quite a few years now. A...

Some of you know me by reputation, I've been porting 4AG heads for quite a few years now. A previous client asked me if I would port a 7MG head for him. I agreed............

Well... OST-022 represents a few new numbers for me.... The first one is 6.... for 6 cylinders
My client has asked me to do a bit of porting on a 7MG head. It had the "typical" head gasket failure back by #6, so before he re-assembled it, he asked me to see what I can do.......

Now more numbers....
.10 - 62.66, .15 - 92.20, .20 - 111.38, .25 - 123.08, .30 - 127.93

Confused yet?

How about another set of numbers......
.10 - 73.83, .15 - 107.50, .20 - 135.85, .25 - 155.95, .30 166.40

So what do all those numbers mean??? :D

Those numbers are the flow numbers from my flowbench as I tested cylinder #5. Each valve's flow is measured at specific lift points - .10" of lift, and then ever .050" of lift there after. the first grouping are from the exhaust, while the 2nd grouping are from the intake.

checking the intake side.......

and checking the exhaust....

Meanwhile..........

Above is a 2 panel showing the overall head - intake and exhaust, chamber view as well as the top of the head.

Lets take a more isolated view of the intakes....

Can you see what I see??

What do I see?

Why do I think it is a problem??

More to come :D

So last month, i changed air filter, oil and filter, and sparks plugsand then, last week, I went to Nashville Marta emission testing. It never failed but it doesn't passed it. The hydrocarbons are about 4 times highly than it should be. Is o2 sensor the problem?

not on a Supra but my Crown, hoping someone knows what could be up

so on Friday i took my Crown (7MGE) a hour out of town, i was hitting 160kmh going there and it rode absolutely fine. when i stopped, i thought i faintly smelled coolant but it thought whatever its just the heat. came home Saturday, poked around the engine bay, and the coolant reservoir was empty. checked the rad, it was down about half a liter. thought i checked the overflow a couple weeks ago and it was halfway full like it should be. when i checked it after getting off the highway, there was wet coolant on top of the reservoir tank itself. theres crust there from coolant always being on it, i thought the hose from the rad to the overflow was sweating a bit, but the small hose on top of the reservoir that dumps coolant to the ground if the reservoir overflows was wet like coolant went through it. thought uh oh headgasket

car and engine have only 92,000km but ive read that 7MGE headgaskets can just go no matter how lightly the cars been driven. only thing is theres no other real blown headgasket symptoms. oil isnt milky at all, if i run the engine hot theres no bubbles of air going into the reservoir, no overheating, there is a bit of white smoke for a minute when i cold start it but its not really thick or sweet smelling, etc. havent run a compression test yet

i thought maybe the rad cap was bad, so i threw a new one on (old one was from when the car was in Japan, so at least 6-7 years old, more likely 10). read a million threads on the subject last night, someone said that a bad thermostat can cause it (how i cant imagine), but i put a new one in this morning. old one looked old, Toyota one with TEQ stamped on it so for all i know it could be original

today i drove it alot got it warm, went on the highway again but only for about half a hour hitting 120kmh. no coolant loss at all. does it sound plausible that the thermostat or rad cap were bad and caused coolant to go somewhere? its not leaking coolant, so it either burnt it when i was flying on the highway or it got pushed out the reservoir somehow. hoping the headgasket isnt bad, but if it is i can make a weekend out of it and do the timing belt at the same time

thanks for any info

So I have an '84 5M-GE, had it for about five years, almost a year and a half ago it suddenly died....

So I have an '84 5M-GE, had it for about five years, almost a year and a half ago it suddenly died. I tried a few things at the time, but with no luck. Recently, however, I've had more time to focus on it, and a need to. The symptoms are that it will start, no problem, but it wont idle, and it's hard to hold it below 2 grand, after doing the following it's gotten better, but still won't idle, it just dies. SO, on that note I have tested and set the Throttle positioning sensor, tested the AFM it's good, removed and cleaned and verified that the ISCV is working properly, checked every vacuum line in sight without finding anything, and cleaned the EGR system as described in the very handy sticky on the process. I don't know what I'm missing here, any help is greatly appreciated! I've scoured the site as best I can and followed a lot of leads, one thing that comes to mind just from what I've read is the ECU, however, it just doesn't seem to fit the symptoms because once in a while it will try to save itself from dying, but just doesn't quite make it. Thoughts?

Hey im building a supra for my daily so I bought this "running" parts car for my current 84 cs. Its a 5mge automatic and its misfiring on cylinder 2 4 and 6 ??? Ive never seen this in my life and im completely blown away... so I checked spark. All 6 have spark at the cap and the end of the plug wire. So I pulled the plugs and there all brandnew. But the misfiring ones looked as if there was never combustion sense the head was put on ( previous owner did a head gasket on it without machine work ). When I pulled the plugs the cylinders were wet from fuel but for shits and giggles I checked the injector wiring and everythings good. I checker vacume lines also ( just because ). Ive also done the timing 3 times to make sure its timed right lol I cant figure this out ANY help would be amazzing. I want my car back running so I wanna see if I can swap this motor into my 84 5 speed. And the one with the misfire is a 85 Btw.

Anyone please help a supra guy I wanna drive my car! Thanks

I have an 85 mk2 which im in the middle of installing the harmonic balancer after fixing the damage done by the crank bolt coming loose. I notice that on the back side of the balancer on the mating surface where it touches the timing gear, there is a raised portion (maybe 3mm in length) that would seem to touch the timing gear first before the flat part of the balancer would. hope that makes sense??
Im wondering if this is suppose to be there or could that be some damage that was caused by the crank bolt coming loose(hence the rebuild). Im just not sure I should re-install it like this.
