you should have taken it back

That is probably the best option; but, it is still a bit of a gamble, if they screw up the clearances then I guess your new gear set is toast.

There is one local place I can go to, I have heard good things and I am not sure if I can judge them for this current rebuild since my gears are probably worn.

I would like to dream that as I drive it the whine will slowly go away but I should probably just leave it parked until I get the new gears...

If by some miracle I manage to get this fixed properly I will write up a general diff repair guide..I have learned a decent amount by doing everything wrong first.

One idea would be is to have them show u the wear patter on the gears after assemble , basically checking their work

it would be very obvious on the ring
Have them put dyecem on ring and and the rotate pinion until u can see wear marks

Eons ago we used "Red Lead" or "White Lead", which I always thought was a primer, but I guess the stuff used to pattern the gear contact was something different than paint!

I got underneath it and was able to have a listen with the wheels spinning: I think it may be from a pinion bearing or something to do with the solid spacer clearance; I was listening through a screw driver and most of the noise was coming from the front of the diff.

In any case, I will be driving it down the the shop early tomorrow morning.

IF they agree that there is a problem,it has to come out AGAIN.
I know that it's very difficult to set up the gear sets(PITA).
    Please keep us informed.
Remind them of how much money that you paid them to do it correctly, the first time.
Maybe they can make it right for you.

I brought the car down to them today and took the mechanic for a drive so he could hear it: " I have never heard a diff this loud" was what he said about it...
He seems to think it's the gears: either way I am ready to go all in; I will find out tomorrow how much it is going to cost for a new bearing set and a new gear set.

I really hope they are gentle with me and the labour hours they want to charge

Probably around 1k when this is all said is what I am preparing for.

For the next week(or more) my baby will be spending its time in their lot out in the cold.
