hey ya'll, i've had my beauty of a supra for a year now and it died on me the other day, the problem appears to be the igniter, but i've had a hard time finding the part. i've heard that you can use igniter's from '84-'86 for the '83. can anyone confirm this for me? also if anyone has one lying around please pm me!!! i want to get my baby back on the road asap!

You heard wrong. 1983 was also a one year only part. I believe it was posted here in an igniter thread that the 83 igniter can be used in an 84, but for some reason the 84 and newer igniters will not work in an 83. The 82 igniter is also a whole different animal and won't work in anything but an 82. Good luck in your part search!

You will need to find the correct TOYOTA part number for your igniter replacement.
Do your search with that part #.

Kevin may have one,but he is snowed in,among other complications.

E Bay idiots pile the '82 through '85 units as being the SAME................. Dan says NO.
You need to refer to a repair manual for an '83 5 MGE,Sir.

There are multiple reasons that you may not have spark to the sparkies!

    http://www.celicasupra.com/forums/sh...-randomly-quot

ALL OF THAT was for an '82.
He has gone VERY deep into his(random) NO SPARK issue.
You may learn some stuff. It's work a look. No,really.

IIRC late '83's used different ignitor. Best to post the number from your ignitor.

I could dig around to find the Toyota part number for you.
    Maybe tomorrow.
The FAQ is difficult to navigate and I don't think that part number is included. '83 ONLY?
    Thanks for the post,Tom.

A guy near Reno has a project car that he says is an 84 but it looks like an 83 to me. Say he has 2 ignitors and other parts. Here is the link: http://sacramento.craigslist.org/cto/5916268435.html

I'm repeating some of what has already been said, but I'm putting together an article on the Igniter and have lifted the text verbatim.

The Igniter for the 1983 through 1986 Mk II Celica Supra had two major revisions.

    89620-14360 MA61 (08/1982 – 07/1983)
    89620-14361 MA61 (08/1983 – 11/1985)

Neither part is available new from Toyota or from aftermarket replacement part manufacturers.

You will have to find a used Igniter assembly to get your car working. Technically, these different parts can be swapped one for the other with one consideration. The coil used with each of these two Igniters is different and should be switched with the Igniter.
One could splice the coil connector from your old Igniter onto your new connector, but it is probably easier just to get the matching Coil.

Here are all the part numbers associated with the Igniter and Coil.

    1983 Igniter and Coil
    89620-14360 Igniter (08/1982 – 07/1983) Obsolete
    90919-02106 Coil (08/1982 - 07/1983) Available from Toyota. 2-pin connector
    19070-43070 Coil w/Igniter (08/1982 – 07/1983) Obsolete

    1984/5/6 Igniter and Coil
    89620-14361 Igniter (08/1983 – 11/1985) Obsolete
    90919-02154 Coil (08/1983 - 11/1985) Obsolete from Toyota.3-pin connector
    19070-43071 Coil w/Igniter (08/1983 – 11/1985) Obsolete

Apparently the 1983 Igniter was not as reliable as the 1984/5/6 Igniter. I don't think that there is any real difference between the coils except for the connector style. Both actually use 2 wires, but the 1983 Coil has a 2-pin connector and the 1984/5/6 Coil has a 3-pin connector.

If you have an original Igniter/Coil on your car, the decal with part number on the coil is actually for the Igniter WITH Coil. The part number for the coil is hidden under a plastic clip that holds the High Voltage Tension wire in place on original Coils. Therefore the part number for the coil does not appear to be present. If the plastic clip is missing the Coil part number will be visible along with the part number for the combination, making identification more confusing!

There ARE Cressida Igniters that are still available from OEM vendors that can be modified for use on the Celica Supra but that is a whole different topic

    I hope this helps.

Cool HOLY GRAIL for '82&'83 5 mge.

Helps? You cleared a way a LOT of muddy water so we can see the real truth, here.
This information will help a LOT.

Ignitor/coil is a matched unit. That blows me away.It makes no logical sense to make a matching PAIR to what I think is a K-Mart ignition coil.

    89620-14360 Igniter for the early'83.
    89620-14361 MA61 (08/1983 11/1985)

Dale,HOW do you find this information and can the MODS make this a STONE pillar /sticky for the early MK II's?

I don't think that you just pulled this out of a magic hat.
I searched for hours to find an '83 OR '82 wiring diagram ,with color codes for the ignition circuit!
    EYE did give up.
    The original thread poster.... DID!
Where are these golden nuggets hidden?
    I'm impressed,beyond measure! I'm speechless.
This forum is TOAST without you,Dale.
