    Throttle Cable Replacement

I searched at Rock Auto and Toyota Parts Zone, and either found nothing (RA), or found it was discontinued(TPZ)>

SO....even though I don't "need one" right now, I'm sure the time will come when I do, what is everybody using?

The cable broke once on my 1975 VW Dasher, but since I was doing Field Service at the time, and had boxes of stuff with me, I was able to run some wire through the cable jacket, and use it as a "hand throttle" to get back home, where my first stop was the VW dealer!

I wouldn't even worry about it. There are places that make custom cable if you give them the measurements. I had a custom cruise control cable made and I just salvaged the special Toyota parts off a donor cable.

OK, I'll scrounge around for a donor cable for the throttle and cruise control.

    Hi Jim,

As usual, take everything I say with a grain of salt, but it looks like the throttle cable is still available from Toyota.

    78180-14370 (08/1981 - 07/1982) No longer available
    78180-14620 (08/1982 - 11/1985) US$54.83

It looks to be the same part number for automatic or 5 speed. The early cable was probably for 1982 cars only and I strongly suspect that the newer part is backwards compatible even to that year.

The part still shows availability, but sometimes the Toyota database is not totally up to date. I guess as the parts get ordered, it may take a day/week/month/? to show.
I would call your local Toyota parts person and ask about this part number.
Let me know what you find out. They can usually give you numbers remaining when they check stock.

    Thanks, Dale.
Toyota Parts Zone says that one doesn't fit my car, but I don't know if there's any difference between a 1984 cable, and a 1985 cable.

    I'll order one anyway....

    Hi Jim,

I did some further checking which implies that there is a throttle cable for an auto versus a manual car, but then

    https://www.toyotapartsdeal.com/oem/...or-link,,78180

This implies that one was replaced by the other. The part that still shows availability is the older part, so it sounds suspect.

I looked at the throttle cables on my manual versus my auto car and the ends and routing sure look the same.

I guess it's its even odds whether either part is available or whether the one supposedly still available will fit a manual.

Ah, the joys of 32 year old cars!
