    5mgte Ebay Turbo

Has anyone installed a 7mgte turbo kit from ebay on their 5mge?

Would the header in the kit fit? Or is a stock 7mgte header the way to go?

    Thanks

if you decide to ebay turbo kit your car, the welded headers will crack like crazy, spend the extra $150 to grab the cast manifold for a t4 turbo. they use a 50mm wastegate that driftmotion sells. that wastegate costs $100.

Cast manifold is a lot easier to plumb, keeps the heat down in then engine bay, and can spool the turbo faster. Tubular looks cooler and can have more potential on crazy big setups. They can all crack though. Even the stock Toyota manifolds crack.

The 7m and the 5m exhaust manifolds have the same bolt pattern so if your kit bolts up to a 7mge or 7mgte head then it will bolt up to the 5mge just like a stock 7mgte manifold onto a 5mge. You have to cut a notch out of the 7mgte manifold where it fits next to the power steering pump bracket to fit the 5m so chances are you will need to do the same with a kit meant for the 7m. When I turbocharged a 5mge and a 6mge back in the '90s I just used the stock 7mgte manifold and CT-26 turbo but after blowing them both up I smartened up and have since been swapping in the whole 7mgte.

Use search - your question has been asked and answered several hundred times on this forum over the years.

I hear you say that and it makes me worry, since I'd like to go turbo eventually...... BUT it should be possible to turbo 5M's reliably / safely.
I'm guessing that back in the 90's you weren't running standalone ECUs, which would really help for safety and reliability.
Were you running crazy boost ???

As they say cheap, fast, or reliable pick 2. There's no reason to say you can't make a 5MGTE reliable, its just a lot easier to plug in a 7mgte and walla have 232hp with Toyota reliability.

I apologize for the way I worded my question. What I was really wanting to know was whether or not there would be enough room in the engine bay for an ebay kit 7mgte header. From the way it appears in photos the header looks wider than the manifold. Maybe the turbo placement is different though so it would even out?

Is anyone running a turbo from ebay on any of our engines? If so your thoughts on its value for your money would also be appreciated.
