Looking back I realize that I ended up "drifting" this thread off topic. But I guess that since I am describing a shifting issue, maybe all the info together may end up being helpful as a whole.

So I just finally found the old mileage logs for my '85 P-type M/T, which as I described above has a shifting "thud/bump" issue going through neutral, upon which you guys were so kind as to offer opinions. Here's what I found out about the clutch: I had totally forgotten that my dad had the clutch replaced in '04, at a guy's transmission shop who I grew up with and who is good (too many projects of mine since and I can't believe I forgot this).

The new clutch has only 18K miles on it. It all comes back to me now that I remember demonstrating the "thud/bump" going through neutral, and those guys couldn't figure it out either, and I even went with Dad back to the shop after the clutch replacement and no one still knew what it was. The thud/bump was UNAFFECTED by replacing the clutch. It's been there since at least '93, with 40K miles. However, until I locate the actual paper receipts for the services, I do not know whether the pressure plate was replaced/serviced. I'll have to report back when I find the receipts (they may still be at my mother's place).

Maybe some sort of internal transmission issue, or a maladjustment of the shifter mechanism as it interacts with the internals?

It made a HUGE difference! The car shifts way better now than it ever has I'm a dumbass for not fixing this earlier
Imagine when I fixed the first one after 5+yrs of having the most wobbly crap shifter I've ever seen in a mk2!?! There was so much head-slapping going on, it was ridiculous! Glad it made it there in short order and that it did the trick!
