1Jzgte vvti update and driving impression

It's been along time that I have post any threads, I've been very busy and many things happen after my vacation. I finally got sometime to work on my 1jz vvti motor after servicing like 6-10 Toyotas a day. Let me recall my infamous story in 2004 supra invade vegas(crazy 8). Here's the story from the begining. I will try to make it short as possible.

Complete Chaser(Jzx100) auto clip from "G-speed", with the help of Jose Valle. I came to the warehouse I saw the clip I had it towed to my house the next day(rougly around April of 2004) about the same time I swap a 3rd gen motor into my 91mr2 and have been driving it hard to this date with absolutely no problems..
In July I started the project and finish it around late September before Crazy 8.
(Sop) SSr wheels thru a very unreliable shop never came in. Borrowed stock wheels and tires from a very nice member Bob Sully, (name will be mention again) just to get to vegas. Blew 2 tires on the way at night called Bob up and he had my car towed to the Luxor parking lot around 5:30 a.m.. Blew another tire coming home (thanks Dave). Called up sir Bob again, had it towed home.

Ok so there is the short version of the story.

April 28 2005 I got a phone call from Jeff from "Dynamic Autosport" "after 5 months "John I got good and bad news for you.. your Works wheels should be here at the shop later in the day but your Apexi power fc is not in yet" I left my work around 3:00 p.m. blast thru the heavy traffic to Dynamic autosport in Lake Forest and got my wheels (so happy!) Sent the wheels to get it mounted and balanced. On my car !! Pictures will be posted soon.

Ok now I got my wheels on my car..and also the Addco sway bars! It hook up now but the engine is still missing at boost levels and major cut at 12-15 psi boost.
I dynoed 286.7h/283.2t @10.5psi . We tried 15psi but it missed and dropped back to 10.5psi. at the 2004 supra invade vegas.
Installed Hks DLI didn't help..installed dual 10 inch fan for the intercooler didn't help either. Engine runs and idles smoothly and quietely. Is it my auto ecu? No it is the spark plugs!! After I got the engine running in September of 2004 I did experience inermittent misses under boost so I replace the spark plug with what I took out. Major no no! The owner of this Chaser in Japan had the wrong plugs in the engine! The plugs are the same as ones used in camry, avalon v-6(dual grounds). I replace the plugs again w/Ngk iridiums (heat range #7) used in the 2js w/bpu's. Problem fixed. Now the engine pulls hard @10.5psi with no misses and even harder @14.5psi.

I will be getting the power fc in a few days as promised and will installed it and will let you guys know more about this engine and it's limitation. Also will be getting it dynoed and I will tried to get some pictures up soon.

Nice update John!!! And I'm also glad you finally got some decent wheels. If anything, I'm quite surprised that those tires managed to barely stay in one piece after all of those.... uhmmm...... ahem..."test drives" ahem... that a bunch of us got to partake @ Vegas last year (including yours truly, thanks again for letting me test drive the 1J.

Can't wait to see the pics of the Works wheels. Did you ever get your $$$ back from those SSR's??

Oh yeah, and I can now assume we can expect well over 300rwhp on the 1J??

And how is the progress going on the Redpra 2JZ????

    Thanks Chris..

I will have a friend host the pictures, for some reason on the bottom of the screen to the left says I may not have attachments.

    I'm sure well over 300rwp..

I'm currently working on my friend's Acura Rsx w/greddy turbo kit. Dropping the transaxle and installing a Kazz lsd. As soon as the car is done I will began the 2J swap. (The greddy turbo kit $ucks balls, and greddy needs to admit it) off topic.. (greddy turbo kits comes w/greddy e-manage but it has all kinds of tuning problems w/factory ecu, to make it run correctly one must send the car's ecu to Hondata,it cost about $1,200.00 plus $ for tunning on the dyno , etc...)

Ok I was wrong! I thought the Ngk iridium plugs fixed the missing problem under high boost after car gets a little hot and sometimes when barely warmed up.
So what now? My next guess would be the igniton coils(3)or the plug wires. Where am I going to find some igniton coil and plug wires for my 1jvvti motor to try it out? I got an idea! Let's use the coil off the 2jzgte(6 individual coils/vs. 3 for the 1jvvti plus plug wires) I did just that and I for now can gauantee the problem is fixed! I drove for almost an hour pedal to the metal high boost(14.5psi) on the streets and on the 91 freeway today today on the 22nd of May in the afternoon and it is hot outside. No more misses!!

    Hrmmm....

Coulda "sworn" that John had posted some pictures either in here, or in the picture forum, but I could not find any. So I then started to look for the one other "obvious" choice... Vegas pictures from last year (and I knew lots of peeps were taking pictures of this, since there are not many 1JZ-GTE vvti motors in the Supra community).

This is from the collection of pictures that Steve Sidman posted.
