Exclamation Help me Diagnos the problem

Ok heres the deal my timing keeps retarding itself. I took it to a mechanic and he put a wrench on one of the camshafts and turned it the camshafts turn about an inch or so before it seams like it catches. the rest of the engine does not change. He says that is my crankshaft gear for the timing belt is alllowing the play before it catchs. I reset the timing and advance it then it retards. Is he correct? I can't seem to find the part he said what bad its driving me

take the sprockets off and make sure the key is still there. dont use the timeing belt to hold the sprocket when you loosen the bolts. use a holding tool so the sprockets domt spin.

Check my reply in the thread "Timing REALLY far off", as OneEyedBadger is having the same issue as you. I would pull it apart before you buy any parts for it, in case the crankshaft is ruined and you have to buy a different engine. Tanya can tell you all about that from her bad crank experience.
