7ME Swap???
So, looks like my head gasket is gone on the 4ME.
What would a 7ME swap involve? Can I use the stock 4ME tranny?
Will the ECU work?
Other issues???

not sure I've ever seen a 7ME. Do you mean the 7MGE from the NA Mk III Supra or the later Cressda? Or are you asking about the 7MGTE turbo motor from the Mk III Supra?
I'm pretty sure you'll need to upgrade to a newer ECU.
The smaller of the transmissions is the W58. I don't know if it'll bolt up but I'm sure someone will pipe up with the answer...
Have you posted the question in one of the forums for the older Celica's?Jeff Sawyer
I used to have a few Supras. I do miss them...

Yes the 7mge will drop right into your mki, the tran's will work and so will the motor mounts.
it make's alot more power then the 4me tho, so if it's an auto you might consider upgrading for the a340e or going 5spd w/ 58.
you will need the engine harness and all electronics in the engine bay that connect to the engine harness or engine. aswell as the 7mge ecu doesn't matter auto or 5spd unless you have an auto.
the exhaust should line up if not bolt right on. and you may have to upgrade to a newer altenator plug, and relocating the atl wiring and same thing for power steering line's if you have em.
hope this helps, but please do search cause it's been covered alot for mk2s and it's fairly straight forward up till the wiring..

Damon (TurboMkI) is the guy to ask.
He did a 7M-GTE swap into a MkI.
A 7M-GE (non-turbo) swap would probably be a lot more balanced - if you find Damon's thread on his MkI, the turbo was a lot of horsepower for the suspension.
The 4M and 7M both share the same basic block casting - so the 7M series will bolt right up to your motor mounts. The transmission will bolt right to the rear end of it. IIRC, you have a 5-speed. The MkI used a W50 5-speed. The primary difference between the W50 on the MkI and the W58 on the MkII is weight. The W58 has an aluminum case and is about 25 kilos lighter. Transmission is basically up to you - the W50 will handle the 7M, but it's easy to swap when you have the engine out, and it will save weight. Also, I believe the MkIII W58 shifter location will fit the MkI better. In either case, you will want to use a beefier clutch - your 4M/W50 clutch isn't heavy enough.
The big challenge is exactly what pimptrizkit mentioned - the electronics.
You will need to get the 7M wired into your MkI wiring harness (contact Junkie - he's got lots of experience making 7M conversion wiring harnesses).
I'd love to hear how it works out.79 MkI, Black Metallic, owned since '82, in restoration - paint done! suspension done! 5ME motor going in soon
83 MkII, Terra Cotta, p-type, stock
85 MkII, Super Silver, p-type, 1JZGTE, Turbo 350 Trans

made the commitment:
brought it up from Toronto today, all there, just need the ECU which he'll have next week.
So the motor is from a 86 with 87,000k on it, minor oil leakage, header, new rad, AMF, coil, harness, odds and stuff, 5 speed tranny, two peice drive shaft .......$500 for all; not a bad deal......assuming it all works.
Yanking out the the 4ME on Friday, it a perfect world I'll be driving it to work on the Monday.

I hope it all goes good for you. Fingers crossed you don’t end up with a bhg.

I like to see how it turns out because i have a spare 7mge that I was thinking of swaping too.

More work and frustration than I have time for.
So the 4m is out, I bought a 7MGE harnsess & ECU but it not exactly the same harness. I was able to swap the oil pan and oil pump to work with the crossmember, and swap the motor mounts. So that's the good, the bad is that my test fit of the 7MGE shows that the tranny mount is about 3 inches different from the original so now I'm gonna swap the trannies. The other issue is the headers, they're touching the idler arm bracket. So I'll try and heat up the pipes and see if they'll bend a bit at the 90° area and bring them in a bit. Failing that, I guess it'll be a chop, shorten and re-weld.
Given my time line I should have went 5MGE. Overall the mechanical issues I'll overcome, I'm not so sure the electrical will be as easy.

So, the mounts, pan and pickup swapped from the 4m to the 7m? I didn't know that. Don't get discouraged. It will be worth it in the end.
