I've also just recently had the same symptoms in my supra, I'm really thinking it is the crush sleeve. It would definitely be a good upgrade along with the weir LSD rebuild kit!

I've had this rear end clunking problem for years and have lived with it. this past week I had the diff covered removed and evaluated.

diff is original with 145K miles.

Pre-load and backlash were in spec, turns out there is some visible wear on parts on the LSD highlighted below causing the play, and subsequent clunking I experience. I'm likely to just live with it (been doing it already for years) and wait until I com across a lower mileage diff in a yard to swap in. Considered the true-trac option, but I see no need for that for my usage of the car.

I may put in an auto 4.10 diff, for my tastes the 4.30 gearing is a little too high and an diff out of an auto is likely to be in better condition that a similar mileage manual car diff.

here are the parts that show wear in green. #41387 was said to have some of the teeth worn (but I don't see teeth on it in the diagram, so I'm a bit confused by what the shop really means), and the little red arrow showing were the wear was observed on #41302 Note that #41388 was not visible from just taking off the diff cover plate, as it is covered by the LSD unit, so it was unclear if that part also has worn teeth like its counterpart.
