From what I recall Road Ripper stating, the silver was applied FIRST before the blue was overlayed. But maybe that only really matters if you're looking at repainting a few panels, rather than the whole car. I think he said the silver didn't match the panel next to it when they had a fender replaced.

And as far as proper masking for paint, I believe it was centered under the side trim.

Brings a smile to my face that someone remembered something useful that i said, and passes it on.

Yup, the silver is laid down first, then the blue, then the whole thing clear-coated. Our car had been in an accident and the front passenger fender was repainted. It was repainted wrong (silver on top of blue) and they tried to butt-match it to the door. The silver looks darker and the point on the front fender tip was wrong. It bugged me so much that I drove across Wisconsin to get some good used, factory original painted fenders so i can swap out the repainted fender.

The solid dark metallic blue color code is 8B4, and the 85 two-tone color code is 2U4 (super silver and dark metallic blue).

Me likes the 2-tone blue/silver combo! That would be my 2nd choice for paint color if I were shopping for another MK2!

And isn't the solid color 8B4 on the '84+ ?!
