funny clunker
To quickly describe the issue,, while stopped, engine idles, trans in neutral, ...traffic light turns green and I put it in gear, it engages then is followed by a larger clunk.. clutch is depressed and the vehicle is motionless while it happens. It also happens in all gears moving into each one while motionless.
What could it be on my 85 mk2? I suspect trans,, but I can't tell

Are you sure the clutch is actually fully disengaging? Common cause leaks in the hydraulic system.

I feel like i had the same problem with my mx63 cressida 5spd, had a strange drive line clunk when putting it into gear. I went to jiffy lube and the dude look underneath while i made it clunk, said he couldn't see or find anything wrong. I drove it for awhile and it eventually went away.

I was actually thinking it may be a clutch not fully disengaged, because I've noticed the vehicle doesn't roll back at all, even on a good hill.. that may just be a dry u joint or binding elsewhere, but ill try neutral on a hill and see if It does the same. There is no leaks on this car from what I can tell. It sat in a garage for the last 2 years and nothing but dry floor underneath the car. Defeniately is a different kinda issue.. I just find it surprising because its a delayed clunking. Move the gear selector click.. then clunk! Lol.. just wierd

bleed the clutch. if it doesnt go away, adjust the rod under the dash from the clutch pedal to the master cylinder. you want it to thread out so that it depresses the piston in the master cylinder more. that should take care of it. however if it is wet on the back side of the master cylinder, then it is leaking. best change the master and slave cylinders both if thats the case.

Yeah, this wont present as a leak on garage floor. It will leak into cabin first.

Ahh I see how it is. It must be partially in the cab some how,? I was wondering why I couldn't notice the leak.
Thanks Will, ill be sure to check those things first thing Saturday morning. That will be the day I begin the overhaul. Getting the vehicle rolling as it should and getting the clunking to dissapear is high on my list of things to do,, plus many others haha

Just an update, after a pretty thorough inspection I've acknowledged no leaks, and both resi's were full of dot 3.. mysteriously saturday morning the car functioned flawlessly.. no ticks, grunts, or clunks of any kind. Damn thing even started rolling around just fine too. I guess it just needed to be driven in lol

This is a good description of my issue. In addition, that when driving and the clutch engages or disengages, I feel and hear the clunk. It is definitely a rear end problem in my case. I have a new rebuilt drive shaft with new joints that is balanced, so I know it's not the drive shaft.
I'm curious if you notice the cluck while driving/shifting as well?
At this time in my case, I suspect the problem is in the diff. Threads and research I've done suggests that the preload between the the pinion and ring gear is less that what it needs to be or is completely non-existent from a over crushed/damaged crush spacer. This has been talked about recently on another thread as well with the "rear end clunk" thing happening.
I am hopeful and fairly certain that only the crush spacer has failed because I have no other issues,..no vibrations, no whining, no diff noise, no loose bolts, etc.. just the clunk. Won't know for sure until the diff is opened and inspected.
I've lived with it for a good while now since this is not my daily and I'm very light on the clutch/throttle, so it keeps the clunk at a minimum...sometimes it can't be helped though, especially during stop and go traffic.
I've have all the toyota bearings, seals, spacers and other non-reusable parts for the diff and I'm probably going to drop it myself and take it to a transmission place locally and have them check it out.

An update with the clunker,
I've been driving the car now full time for atleast a week. Doing recent service on the vehicle I've noticed no case of the clunking, a couple cracked bushings but nothing is out of place or moving. The master cylinder is failing, as its my only culprit left to vanish my sticky brakes. Once in warms up its the brakes that hold the vehicle from rolling, not the clutch that I suspected.. to be replaced lol
As for the clunk, yes I feel its an axle issue too.. I have very little play in my u joints, but there is some. I don't suspect there is enough play to cause the clunk. I also feel it on most shifts also,, I suspect it is the free play in the rear gear, splines, or freeplay somewhere in the transmisson. Possibly my sticking brakes may also be causing slack in the gear because when its cold I hardly notice any clunking, (and the brakes function fine too). Only after I warm everything up do the problems start..
