Packaging and Shipping information? commonly needed tough to ship items?

i have been asked to ship many bulky and delicate items such as hood, dash, hatch, Engine, fender, etc.... i have trouble figuring out how to ship some of the more tough items without crushing the customers budget (or their new part!). i recently posted a "how to ship a dash?" thread and i got some really good info from people who have done it.

i was wondering if we could do a "how to" section for packing / shipping items and then we could make Sticky's for commonly needed items.

someone could post pictures of how they packaged something like say a rear hatch. than list where it went (from A to B)
how much the shipping cost them and who they used to ship.

i know a lot of people would benefit from a "sticky" regarding peoples experiences Freight shipping an engine on a pallet.

i think it could be a good informative section. not sure if anybody would actually post in it though...

might be able to save us all a buck in the long run.

best packaging I've received is the spray foam method. Take your part centre it in the box and depending on the size/complexity of the shape you can use many small bag or 2 large ones and fill them about 2/3's full of spray foam leave the ends open let them expand and voila a foam encasement that will keep your part from moving but also is soft enough to abosorb impact!
(a little more costly then some methods BUT very secure way to ship a large fragile product)

As far as cost I have found Greyhound to be the cheapest on very large items like hoods and fenders.

Golf club boxes work well for long narrow items.

If only it didn't cost $860 just to ship a Us Spec Rear Spoiler to Australia.. I would have it already!

I am shipping parts thast are not worth anything because the cost of shipping years ago it was $5 to ship now its $12. It sucks. Utilize hard cardboard boxes takes time to find but grocery styore have them if you ask pick them up early. Make your own box. I did that for dash boards. It does'nt matter what it looks like but as long as its protected who cares. I do not ship alot of bulky items such as fenders hoods and hatches and have been asked to several time but I would rather just keep it for another day. Most people drive to my house as long as 7 hours away for stuff. Crazy but yet I have traveled as far as 4 hours away with my tow guy to buy the car and thats just for parts cars
