Finally got me a 79 rear end

After looking far and wide I finally got mine, but I don't think its an lsd how can I find out for sure, and if it's not what would you guys suggest for the gearing. My car has a 2jz-gte with a stock 1985 w58 trans and a two piece drive shaft. Any help would be appreciated also looking to do a big brake setup thanks.

if you have access to the car the axle came off of, look at the plate on the firewall. F312 is open diff and F313 is limited slip. LSD were factory in Canadian spec MK1 (except extremely early production numbers like mine so i have a open diff unfortunately lol) and a option on US models

otherwise, with 2 wheels bolted on the axle (left rear and right rear) spin one of the rear wheels. if you spin the right rear by hand for example, the left rear will rotate the same way if you have a LSD. if its a open diff, the opposite wheel will rotate backwards to the wheel youre spinning

Interesting I didn't know about spinning the wheel one direction and seeing what direction the opposite wheel turns in, but I already knew my 81 MK1 has a Non LSD Differential a very quiet one at that. I've had the fluid changed twice at a transmission shop that's a reputable one making sure they used oem compatible Diff fluid so it stays quiet.

Once in awhile, you may see one where the opposite wheel doesn't move when you're spinning the one; that also indicates an open diffy.

The gears and LSD from the Mk2 Supra rear end (as what I hear) will fit in the '79 mk1 solid rear axel housing. So if that's true then just pick the year and gear you want and put the two together as one SRA.
