which Oils/lubes are you using for the JZ,R154 & diff with tru-track? Amsoil, redline?
I know this can get beat to death and probaly has on other forums, but Id like to know what our "crew" here is using.
I just had my R154 completly built and Im going to run Redline MT90 in it...what do you guys run?
for the rear diff with the tru-track and since it is gear driven without clutches and needs no friction modifiers I was going to run
Redline 75W140 NS GL-5 gear oil
or
Amsoil severe gear 75W90
for ENGINE OIL i thinking on using
Redline 5W30 motor oil
or
amsoil 5w-30 signature series 100% synthetic oil
amsoil 10w30 signature series 100% sythetic oil
I also like the amsoil Z-ROD 10W30 oil since it has alot od Zinc in it..this is what i was leaning towards.
Also, amsoil Dominator 10w30 synthetic racing oil looks to be the best choice for racing but not for dailies/weekend racers? IDK?
I dont want to run mobil one or any walmart this or cheap that in my car, Id like to talk the good stuff here like Redline, Amsoil, Motul, and maybe Royal purple.
But lets hear it JZ/R154/tru-track guys..whatcha running and where do you get it?Last edited by ABQMK2; 05-01-2012 at 12:02 PM.

It run MT90 in the trans and the 75W90NS in the diff. If you are running the truetrac you don't need the NS version. Frankly in the majority of my cars I just run Mobil 5W30 that ~$12 a jug a Walmart. I've probably got 200-300k miles in my DDs and they all run perfect and are clean as whistle inside. In my Supra lately I've been running some Pennzoil synthetic mainly because I got it at a good price. Frankly I think the $20 a quart engine oils are like the monster cables of the oil world. From the worst to the best synthetic they are probably within 5% of each other.

all the redline gear oil contain a friction modifier except the heavy shock proof.
heres the decription on the heavy shock proof:
Film thickness greater than an SAE 75W250, yet low fluid friction like 75W90
For heavily-loaded racing differentials and transmissions, problem gearboxes
Many performance racing applications like Sprint/Midget/Dirt Late Model Differentials, Detroit Lockers and spools, NHRA Top Fuel and Funny Car rear ends
Not recommended for most synchro applications due to the product's extreme slipperiness
Maybe I should use this since I have a detroit true-trac?
I have also ran the mobil 1 gear lubes and oils for years in my diesels, turbo cars and tractors etc etc with no issues to report.FOR SALE $20k AND SHE IS YOURS.

MT90 is excelent in the R154
But DO NOT use any type of synthetic oil with that TRUTRAC, it will not work properly. I had a long talk with some guys from Eaton about this! Dino oil ONLY! Cheap "parts store" 75w-90 will be just perfect.

I ran redline 10-40wt in my motor for years, still favor it. MT90 in the tranny always worked well, and always had redline 75-90 gear oil in the trutrac (not the NS).

Thx guys, but this is for my 2J. Not trying to say anything negative about the NA world but this is gonna be ran on E85 and at high boost(29-30psi). So of course I want the best for my girl.
Ive read the a high amount of zinc is good for wear but bad for turbo seals (sounds like bs)and read this and that and its getting a little over whelming.
I love that you guys have had great results with the 10w40 redline. This i assume should be good for my application?
Id really like to run amsoil since its easier to obtain than redline for me.
Don L.: you have a JZ right? cant remember and its not in your sig.
Arch: youre the best I swear. on a side note, I also read your comment about marks crash..well said. If i ever am going sideways over a curb, Im laying into it so my tires are spinning to pop me up and over the curb so i dont roll...easier said then done huh? Ive actually done it once in a jeep and it worked.

Jake Bob the Oil Guy has lots of great info on Zinc content in oil for older engines...
My opinion I would never try Royal Purple period major issues when first released...
Limited experience wt turbos other than fire apparatus...heat is the enemy for oil..Amsoils 0w30 is amazing stuff
And Thank you for the props...Regards,
Arch

r154 trans i run amsoil synthetic 75w-90. in the rear diff with the true trac i run amsoil extreme duty 75w-90. for the engine, i ran castrol gtx 20w-50 oil. but on the 2j im going to run the rotella t 10w-40. it has additivies to keep it from breaking down from the ethonol in e10 and e85 etc... seems the higher power mk4 guys swear by it for their e85 builds.
in my 85, ive been running the walmart brand 10w-40 for a few years now with regular purolator 30001(ford 5.0 application) oil filters. thing runs great. its got over 226k on it and when i bought it it was ~158k and had obviously been neglected. its cleaner inside now then it was when i got it, but i think thats just due to regular oil and filter changes which it obviously wasnt getting before.william

I havent seen extreme duty gear oil just the severe. I assume that what you meant.
As for the Rotella. Ive been running Rotella in all my diesels for over 12 years now with no problems, a few hundred K miles for sure. Ive never seen the inside of my diesel engines either, that must be good..LOL! Alot of the suby guys are running the T6 rotella and I probably may got that route. then my supra, wrx and gmc diesel will all be running rotella. That outta keep it simple enough.
I totally forgot to mention GC. german castrol now called castrol edge SPT. I have about 6 bottle sitting on the shelf. I will give this a try in the ol 2JZ for a 1000 miles and watch OP and temps.Last edited by ABQMK2; 05-02-2012 at 11:14 AM.
