Sister: My engine is making a funny knocking noise.. Me: i found a hole in your block

1994 Nissan Sentra limited edition 1.6L

so for any one interested i shall be posting here the progress of my current project i started mid last month. My sister called me & told me she was on the side of the road & the engine was making a funny knocking noise, she attempted to add oil but it all came out.
me: is the drain plug in the pan?
    sis: Yes,
Me: Tow it home. ill find another engine
    sis: what?

i get home from work & the tow truck was just arriving. got it into the house & go under sure enough found oil every where, drain plug in its place & to no surprise a hole in the block.

I found an engine at a local pick a part for $450 delivered. i did not want to just install the engine as i really don't trust it, for the most part looks like the one that came out. rtv everywhere, and looks like it was assembled from different engines... im sure it was came apart so easy and the rtv was not completely dry. i took it apart same day i got it, right after work (was delivered while i was working) started @ 10pm tore it down to head & block, had to wait on head removal till i went & got an engine stand (harbor freight 65$!!! oriley's s*** my d*** 90$WTF)

so currently i am clean parts & getting ready to port / polish the intake & exhaust. Will also be gasket matching the intake.
just got the port/polish kit in the mail yesterday.

below are some pics. more will come later.

currently my only concern is the when i put back together getting the timing right.... since this is the 1st overhaul i do & 1st time messing with this kind of eng(DOC)..... hahaha!! yeah never done this but i did go to UTI & learned lots of great stuff but i hope i remember it all.. we did eng rebuild there but it was a 350 :/ not exactly the same.

the way i see this is this is practice (since eng is a DOC like the 5m) and my insperation (thats if it runs) for when i get around to doing mods on my car. Depending on what i come across first i will be doing either a turbo install & engine rebuild or just a eng swap. poss 1j/2j. not sure yet still working on research & saving funds.

    the damage:

    the replacement:

    the hole:

    Head removed of the replacement:

    current questions:
Should i remove the the pistons replace rings? i can see crosshatchs in the cyl's. don't look too worn down. then again im already there....

whats the best tool to use to remove gaskets? don't want to get the mating surface's all scratched up - head / block / pan. i really don't want leaks.

how to clean the layer of carbon soot on them piston tops?

    To buy list:
    oil pan gasket
    head gasket
    intake gasket to head
intake gasket upper to lower manifold.
    Exhaust manifold to head gasket
    Throttle body to intake gasket
    Front main seal
D/S trans axle (found boot torn)
P/S trans axle (boot only, was recently replaced i cut the boot to getout easier)
    Fuel filter
    Oil filter
    P/S L.C.A ball joint
Throttle body cleaner- want to try & clean it up inside.
Hi temp ceramic engine paint ( blue - most likely metallic)

maybe - metal polishing kit.... have been pondering about smoothing out & polishing the intake manifold.

list is off the top of my head i know there is more. i saw some hoses that will need to be replace some are for coolant, some hyd for p/s pump & alot of hose for egr system - hopefully i can get the right size hose for egr through my work Will save me sum $$. will find out when i get to that point in the build.
will be working more on this this week. will update when possible.

**********hope yall dont mind this being a sentra & im on CS.com then again this is the "other car" part of forums

any tips / advise or stuff to add to buy list would be greatly appreciated

    THANKS for reading
    Tony

I'm assuming the sentra is her daily driver, if so here's what you should do. Remove the oil pan on the new engine and simply move the connecting rods back and forth to see if there is any bearing issues. Don't remove the rods or dig any deeper if it seems ok. Take the head off of your blown engine with as much of the accessories left alone as possible. If the head hasn't been damaged simply use the new engine as a long block, this will be the cheapest and fastest way to get the car road ready again. You could dig into the intake and clean it up but i wouldn't fix what's not broken, unless she has alternative transportation. Then when it's all said and done you have another top end you can practice porting on and it won't be a prolonged project.

you are correct it is her daily driver but luckly we do have a spare car so she is ok for now. its too late to use as long block i have already removed the head, was planning port/polish since i started this project. i expect & hope to complete this project this month.

yes!! i know this now!! this is what happens when you don't do research before hand. i didn't find out about the 2.0 srd20 till after i got the replacement engine so i was a bit upset with myself but then again its my sisters car & i'm sure changing to srd20 would take more time and moneys then rebuild & i don't want to invest that much into this. this is all coming out of my moms & mine pocket (the lil extras are from me-paint port polish --- possible home made short ram intake)
