Is muffler really needed on my 85 5mge?

I would like to know if it will hurt my hp and tq numbers or help it some if i didn't have a muffler on it. It had a muffler on it but rusted out and all that's on it now is the cat and a 2 foot, 3in diameter pipe at the end of my exhaust and all i can say is it sounds pretty sweet

There is a big difference between do I need a muffler (no) and should I have a muffler (yes).

I think it will be more free flowing and annoyingly loud, but that alone, won't affect your numbers, especially with a stock setup.

Same thing happened to me, stock muffler rusted off and I drove it for a bit that way cause it sounded cool. I can tell you this though...the tuned sound quality of a good muffler is wayyyyyy nicer than that burble that you've got going right now. I can highly recommend the Magnaflow from Raptor Racing. And ditch the cat...if your local laws enforce having one, get a race cat from the same place, that's what I did and I'm super happy with the results!

If it isnt too loud right now then your cat is clogged enough to keep it quiet

Any suggestions on parts for a non-cat back system? The cat back's I looked at were in the $500 range...
