Tune up
Hey guys,
I'm looking to tune my stock 5M-GE up a little, it's a Euro spec car so a few things differ. It was registered Sept 1982 so would this be considered an '83? Ideally looking for genuine Toyota dizzy cap, rotor arm etc. Not sure if it's still on points, I removed the cap and I can't see a standard cam and breakers as you'd expect, just a small plastic cover saying 'DO NOT REMOVE' so I left that well alone
Is it still possible to get standard black plug leads? I could get everything I need from parts suppliers over here but it'll all be aftermarket rubbish.
Regards,
Lew

Check the production date inside the driver door, if it says 09/82, then its an 83. But if you registered (it was bought in...) Sept 82, then it may be an 82. My truck has sat for 10 years, but it is a 93, not an 03.
Black plug 7mm Toyota leads are not available even through Toyota over here. I tried and the boys at work could only get me Bosch or NGK. Caps and Rotors available through Toyota. Toyota uses Bosch or NGK plugs. '82s get .031" gap and all other MKII get .043" gap. Bosch and NGK are pre-gapped, so you need to know your year.
Easy way to tell if 82 or 83, look at your ignition coil, if it is a pyramid, its an 83, if its a box on a cylinder, its an 82.-Taylor Nielsen|Contact Me!

Had a white '82 and a black '83 in the past...

Thanks very much, real helpful info. I'll have a look today but I suspect mine will be a fairly early one, over here we have what we call a V5 document so you can see when the car was first registered for the road, how many owners it's had, colour, engine size etc. Not sure if it's the same over the pond. The coil is definitely a cylinder so I imagine it's an '82. The current plugs are Nippon Densos but as you say Bosch and NGK are a safe bet too, I'll find myself a Toyota garage and get it ordered. The car has done about 3000 miles in the last 11 years so as you can imagine a bit of recommissioning is needed. It starts on the button and runs fairly well, just a little lumpy when warm for whatever reason. I'd rather have everything right because on my daily driver I replaced all ignition components and was amazed by the transformation, so much more pulling power and response, no more misfiring on cold mornings etc.

Installed my new plugs today, waiting on rotor arm and cap coming on the 18th, leads I'll have to source elsewhere. Trawled this site for information on the distributor but couldn't find too much, had a look in my Haynes manual and hey presto some information on the insides of an '82 dizzy. Doesn't look like anything might wear too much in there unlike mechanical points with a cam so I'll leave that for now.

Question guys, can anyone tell me what the specified gap is between the star rotor and sender unit inside the distributor? I've looked all through my manual and can't find anything. Any help would be much appreciated

.0008-0013 air gap measured with a none metallic feeler gauge. only needs to be adjusted if replacing with a new one.
