Can I really reuse the headbolts?
The time has come to redo the head on my sons car. I have started pricing out all of the bits we will need and noticed that I cannot find anybody who sells a set of headbolts other than the really expensive ARP ones. This motor is going to stay stock we are not doing anything fancy. Just after 230,000 miles the head needs a refresh.
Can we get away with reusing the headbolts or do we have to cave in and buy ARP ones. Or are they still available from Toyota for a price which does not break the bank?85 P-Type (my sons)

I'm sure they are still available from Toyota.
But I have re used headbolts without an issue. Stock hg, stock torque, stock hp, I don't see a problem.RIP Les Grover

oem ones cost about the same as arp studs. re-use your stockers or buy studs.

I don't think you need to buy new ones. I have also re-used my Head Bolts, when I replaced the Head Gasket three years ago. No Problems for me yet.

I re-used stock headbolts on a boosted 5m with mhg and had no issues. motor ran strong until the day I sold it. Most important is to check lengths..compare them all and make sure they are all the same length to check for stretching. Clean the threads up really well and clean the holes in the block. You will be more than fine.

BTW the "stock" Headbolt Torque Spec is NOT Correct. I think we (the Forum) have determined that the original number is too low due to the new material that is used. You need to look it UP for yourself there are many threads on it, but 70 foot pounds comes to mind, although it was some time ago.
Just checked 72 pounds is a Good Number, Check this thread http://www.celicasupra.com/forums/sh...478-head-bolts
Do you have an engine hoist? it is much easier to put the head back on (and take off actually) with a hoist lowering it rather than two people leaning over in the engine bay.

i thought the improper bolt torque is only with the 7m and the 5m is fine?

Cool thanks! I guess we will be fine just using the best set we can make up from several heads which are around. We already knew about using a better torque spec when we bolt it down.

Replace them. $70 for them will save a BHG early down the road. They stretch as the engine heats. They stretch and different rates. The threads stretch. Just. Replace. Them.
