if its from the top end of the engine might be that the valve cover is tighten over the torque specs an the rocker arms are hitting

but probably not... its hard to overtorqe a phillips scrw without destroying it. besides, they arent even close to being close enough to ever hit the cover. regulated by design not by torqe specs. just for shits and giggles, pull the covers and you would see damage if this were the case. look at the rockers and the inside of the cover.

knocks and tick are as different as dogs and cats. how loud is your noise? is it metallic? is it just one repetitive sound or are you hearing many noises? i once had a slightly similar sound, almost like it had two exhaust's. i know its a weird way to describe it. in my case i had a blown headgasket between cylinders 3 and 4. it was swapping compression between those cyclinders. having said that, a compression test may be helpful.

given the severity of a potential knock on a freshly machined engine, I would pull the pan and take a look at the rod bearings. its very possible an undersized bearing was used that allows too much oil clearance, which causes a knock. if you catch it early on, damage will be minimal. wait too long and youll be in a grand at the machine shop. it would be worth half a days labor for the peace of mind.

if its a tick, then look into the valvetrain. the lifters suck. how did you check the lifters? if they dont hold pressure well, you can push down on them and actually hear them click if worn enough.

also, how is the ignition system? has it been maintained recently? how about the fuel system? emissions? you could be hearing spark knock, detonation, pinging, or something else. IF you rule out the rotating assymbly, you could take your car to emissions testing and see what its like coming out of the tail. Improper combustion that leads to bad sounds will certainly throw off emissions. It would be a start
