    trans and differential

Okay, so running down the interstate at about 80 i'm pushing almost 4k rpm. I hate that. Could someone possibly tell me what's up with that. i know there has got to be different gear ratio set ups. I have an 85 mk2 p-type. Wanna know a little more about the rear end and tranny, like what all different types of trans and rear ends that come in these cars. Thanks.

Same here. Kinda annoying cruising in 5th at around 100 and your revs are still high!

Get your axle code on the data plate on the firewall...my '86 has a LSD F282 4.30

My choice would be a 4.10 but I dont want to lose much low end...

    F293 4.10

    F283 4.30

    F313 3.91

    F303 3.73

I built a 3.58 for my 7M Supra. I put it in my rather slow Cressida and noticed almost no difference from the 4.1 and 4.3:1 I had in there. I would not suggest changing to a 4.1:1 unless your current diff is shot and you need one. Go as low as you can find if you want to bring the revs down.

I had a diff from an '82 donor under mine until yesterday ( went back to 4.30s) and it was a 3.73 gear set open diff that had been welded... I don't think that I lost that much on the bottom end but on the highway with 2056015s on the rear and the 3.73 gears, I was running 3k @80mph. I was getting almost 23mpg as long as my foot didn't get too heavy. I don't think I would want anything higher that 3.73s tho bc then it probably would be a dog on the bottom end. Look for any 7.5'' regular rotation toyota ring and pinion... I found a 4.88 for mine for $150 (gears only) a couple of years ago. OH a little FYI when doing a gear install... Get TOYOTA bearings from the dealer! Expect to pay for them but if you don't then you will have prolems. I speak from experience! I paid $210 for both carriers bearings, inner, and outer pinion bearings.

92 and earlier 2WD toyota trucks have nice, tall ring and pinion sets, usually with minimal wear thanks to the gutless 22R. Even though its solid rear axle, the gears fit our cars no problem.

That's the other option! And possibly cheaper too!
