    Car Covers (Coverking)

    Hey guys,

I am in the market for another car cover. I had to throw my last one away due to it being contaminated with metal shavings and metal dust, and I did not trust that a regular washing would clear the debris. No big deal since it was a generic cover I received for free. Since then, it has been apparent that my parent's cat(s) have been making the top of my car their new hangout, and there are a few unsightly scratches from them trying to jump onto the car.

I see that Coverking has a few really nice custom fit covers, in a range of materials and durability. If anyone has one of these, can you comment on the fit quality and overall quality for your material choice? There is also an option for a spoiler or no spoiler, but I do not know if it pertains to the double spoiler or the tall 82-84 sunshade. The representative I talked to from Coverking seemed to not know what the spoiler references. I found this thread which seems to say that the option for "spoiler" is for the 85-86 double spoiler, but I have to believe that if the cover is going to be modified it would need to be for the sunshade version.

I am also worried about the fit being extremely tight across the bottom, since I have the full ground effects across the car.

I keep the car in a temperature controlled garage, so the cover is no more than just a glorified dust cover and bed for cats. I sometimes do have a hard time wanting to spend a ton of money on a cover since the garage constantly has metal working and woodworking going on inside. I would hate to buy a $300 cover and feel the need to have to throw it away due to contamination that won't just wash out. (Perhaps I am just being overbearing, and the metal contaminants can be easily washed out)

    Thanks,

    -Mike

I can't commend on Coverking, but Covercraft's covers are nice. I had one on my Mercedes 380SL, and the fit was loose enough around the bottom to fit around the bumpers without issue. If the fit on their Benz cover is an indicator, I see no problem getting it to work on your car with the body kit.

Also, mine was a good cat bed. Only thing to be concerned with is cats tend to jump onto covers with their claws out, and most covers are so thin that their claws will penetrate, hitting the paint. I used a foil bubble insulation pad between the car and the cover to prevent this.

go to this adress, and you can select the material (and $$)
I purchased the Noah one years ago.
After 4 years I decided to wash it and went to these big huge washing machine places.
After it, it started to let water go thru it. I emailed them, explained, they game me an RMA number.
I returned it and they ship me back a new one.

The fit is VERY good, and you need the mirror pockets (some sites have it as an option)
The front and rear lower portions have elastic in them, with plenty of extra so it should strech around your body kit.
It might not cover the side up to the bottom, as mine stops pretty flush with the rocker moulding.

The number I ordered at the time is: C9133NH from covercraft.com

Mike - I have also had good luck with the Noah covers. The fit is excellent and they wear very well. Rather than wash my old one (I had it since 2005) I just purchased a new one. They are custom fit to the car - just make sure you specify 85/86. I think I paid around $215-$220.

    Phil doesnt read very well.

Mike I dont believe the standard pattern will fully cover your ground effects, or it will be very close, if it does.

Heres Phil's new cover. We like the Noah fabric because it tends to offer a little more padding for minor mishaps.

With regard to the metallic dust... unless you can completely irradicate that mess, contamination will always be an issue.

Only option I can think of is one of these bubbles:

The side skirts will no longer be an issue either.

This particular design has a fiberglass tent pole style skeleton, so it always keeps its shape

Makes driving in and out very easy.

I know Phil doesnt use his anymore, so perhaps you guys can work something out.

Thanks for the info everyone, and thanks for the reference pic Greg. The biggest worry I have with the cover is that it will stretch to the extended lengths of the front lower spoiler and rear spoiler. If some of the side skirt is exposed, no big deal.

Those bubbles are pretty choice Greg, but I am not sure the footprint will be acceptable for our garage. We are also constantly moving our cars around in the garage for incoming/outgoing projects, so moving one of those around might also be an issue.

I am going to my parents’ house this weekend to work on the car a bit. I think I am going to try and clean some room in the other half of the garage we use for just storage, but isn't heated. We don't work on this half of the garage (It is partitioned), so there is little to no contaminants over there. If I can squeeze the car safely amidst all the other crap, I think I am going for the NOAH cover.

    Thanks,
    -Mike

If you're storing it in a garage full time, go with something softer and more inexpensive. There is no need for a waterproof cover if it's inside 100% of the time.

since it sounds like you'll want to replace your cover every couple years due to the metal shavings, you should try to save a few bucks...

Does theses bubbles also have plastic on the ground ?
Hopefully yes, because if not, humidity trapped in there will dammage more than it protects (imho)

Yep the bubbles are fully enclosed (i.e. plastic on the ground). That building shut down a few years ago and I had to relocate my cars to different garages with no need for the bubbles (as you can see in the pics that place was quite damp/musty). I still have the bubbles if anybody wants to buy them; they are a royal PITA to set up though.

Mike sorry for thread hijack; let us know what cover you eventually wind up with.
