5M Stuck headbolt
Got a rounded headbolt...Son of a bitch original owner decided to torque it half-assed and leave it. Havent been able to get it out. Easy out hasn't worked. Anyone got any tricks? Its kind of in a shitty place too
#5 on the torque out routine. (second from the firewall, passenger side)

Yeah, I'd like to get those but IDK where, and have you seen the stock 5M headbolts? They are big, and they are allens....You're telling me that'll work on it? Where can I get one locally? (Sacramento)

yes i have seen a 5m headbolt...probably more times then most as I had more build hours and work into my 5m then 95% of the forum.
I understand they are allens with with a perfectly round outside edge...these are tapered, and "reverse cut" so as you try and loosen the bolt, it is tightening the twist socket onto the bolt head. Any good tool store should carry them, a nice set is a must have when working on older cars.

Please find me one. The ones around here ( Autozone, Napa, OSH, Kragen, O'Reily ) have no idea wtf this specialized shit is...I dont have access to Snap-On/MAC locally as far as I can tell. Can I RENT that one socket from you and mail it back to you? LOL I'm seriously that desperate...

either the socket trick, or you gotta drill the head of the bolt off, kobalt milling bit, one thats slightly bigger than the diameter of the bolt, 10mm 7/16 would probly be perfect, the hole in the bolt will keep the drill centered. only go down to the washer, if it doesn't just fall off, you can tap it with a hammer it'll just pop off then you can lift the head off the rest of the bolt and use vice grips to get it out. once you get the head off theres no tension on the threads anymore.

Yeah, thats what I've been doing. Drilling it out. I'm just scared of doing it that way. I really dont want to ruin this head or anything. But thats what i've had to do. I do it for a little and let it cool down.
I miss my 2J. Everything feels so much more....simple with it even though it must be more complicated. Then again I also have ARP headstuds on that motor now lol.
Speaking of which, FSM says that these bolts are reusable...Is this true? I've never reused headbolts in any of my Nissan motors... I shudder at the though of 6 Dollar bolts, and 3 dollars washers from Toyota.

I reused all my headbolts (numerous times) with no problem...even with a mhg and boost.

Get them good and cleaned... A bottoming thread chaser would be nice to do a thorough cleaning of the bolt holes in the block...
Lube the bolt (ive always just dipped the bottom 2 or 3 threads in motor oil) and you'll be set.
