87 camry afm or ecu problem

i really hope this is an ok place to post this. my DD camry, has been stranded at work for about 3 weeks. the camry forums are just too sparsely visited to get any good info. so heres whats going on.

1987 toyota camry auto with ect. 3sfe engine. all stock.

the morning of the car started and drove to work all good, as usual. parked with no issues. later, i went to leave for lunch, it started fine and drove out of the parking lot then it started acting like a bad tps. it was really jerky and had almost no power. i managed to get it up to speed and made it to the gas station and it seemed to drive fine back. i chocked it up to a bit of bad gas that passed. i went to leave work and it was really hard to start (starts and dies 1-2 seconds). carb cleaner into the intake does help, and once i got it, had very low power. when i would try to open the throttle it would try to die. i got a ride home and rushed to get my supra back on the road. i did

so i checked around on the camry, the timing belt is fine (although has a small bit oil on it). dizzy timing is good. plugs check out. i disconnected the tps and no changes. i pulled the o2 sensor to see if it would help in case of cat clog. nothing. i checked the dtc's and it gave a code 22. which shows as water temp sensor (just like our mk2's!) a bad wts isn't gonna keep me from driving home. so i remembered a post on here, and jammed a screwdriver into the afm flap and it started and reved! ok cool i though, the afm is bad. went to the junkyard and got another but still does the same thing.

now im at am empass. did i pick a bad afm from the yard, or could i have a wiring or ecu problem.

    any thoughts?

ok just to update, i charged the battery up at AZ and now im only getting code 24 with the original afm . the afm i got from the yard was popping up with 24, 31, and 32. Im not sure where the 22 went from before but likely i miss read the mil.

I went to the ecu and checked for continuity and the afm connector. All wires showed very very low resistance. (with the afm UNPLUGGED). Both afm's test very similar in numbers, although the code differnece. Interestingly enough, both afm's, and for that matter EVERY afm i found at the scrapyard showed infinite resistance across E2 - THA. For shits and giggles i checked E2 - THA on my running 85 5m and got resistance. forget the numbers now but still. Is every afm in the junkyard bad?

Oh and FYI, with the key on, the ecu is putting 5 volts into the THA connector.

Will this code 24, Intake air temperature signal, prevent the car from starting? maybe just run rough but a no start? Spraying starting fluid makes it run for a few seconds. jumping the fuel pump does not help. so maybe something is preventing the injectors from firing?

last time i saw that problem on a similar year Camry, it had a vacuum leak from behind the intake manifold area. when you opened the AFM flap, it probably let enough air in to bypass a leak.

I've got the original Toyota FSRM and electrical book for your exact year, I'm only asking $40 bucks for the both of them together. PM if you'd like them, super handy to have (and near impossible to find).
