    Hello Guys

I know this may seem random. But I am interested in buying a 79 supra down my street. Its not in running condition. From what I remember it cranks but doesnt start. My step dad added some starting fluid somewhere and cranked it and it started up and then died again soon after. I Really don't know these cars/motors at all. I mainly know my 88 Alltrac . But what I am getting at is there anyone that can give me some good info step by step on what to check for to get this thing running? What I would honestly like is if someone can give me their number. And when the time comes to check it out. Ill call them and follow instruction on what to do and look for. I've read a little on fuel pumps and clogged fuel filters on here. But don't know where to locate them. So If anything please help

Air, compression, fuel pressure, spark, and correct timing is required for an engine to run. Any engine.

You more than likely have air, compression, and it started up for a bit so you have timing and spark. So with that in mind what does that leave you with? What supplies the engine with fuel pressure? Gota make you use your brain a little bit. I'd say buy it for $500, put it in your garage and learn. Only way to stop being a noob is to get your hands dirty. We have all been there at one point.

    Buy it!!, good luck.

my first guess would be the fuel pump is going, the fuel pumps on MK1 are external and by the gas tank. not too bad to do minus dealing with 30+ year old bolts and whatnot. if spraying brake cleaner or starter fluid into the mass air flow got it going for a bit before it died, i would say its the pump

fuel filter is on the drivers side about halfway under, and theres a shield covering it. last time i was in there i think theres 2 bolts you undo for the shield. clogged fuel filter would probably make it buck a bit or run crappy vs not starting at all, starting fluid making it run means the filters not plugged

MK1 are about one of the easiest vehicle design to work on, RWD with a open engine bay and pretty much everything is laid out in the open. easy vehicle to learn the basics on

Thank you guys. I have some good info so far. I will get on it asap. Ill let you guys know the outcome. If everything goes alright and the motor runs and drives. I can buy this thing for $500 I just need to check out if its even worth buying. If motor is no good or if it doesnt even drive I wont bother? also mind me asking what do you guys think about Sea Foaming this motor?

yeah my first guess is fuel pump, or less of a chance but the spark plugs could be really really burnt up and it needs plugs/wires. if it at least starts with starter fluid, its not too far off from running.

SeaFoam does nothing, we're told to use it at work but wouldnt even consider using it in our own vehicles. does absolutely nothing

if the engine is shot, 4ME are cheap. you can get another engine cheap or swap in a 7MGTE/W58 combo

not to jump in on the middle of a conversation... but i'm having an issue that i'm almost sure is fuel filter related with my mark I. i've changed the fuel filter that mounts to the left side of the engine near the starter... not much better. i've also ordered the in tank filter. is there a 3rd filter in the fuel line as well... or am i misreading? thanks much, and best regards ~ rob.

as far as i know, MK1 have the canister fuel filter by the starter sorta as you said, and theres apparently a strainer by the fuel pump that can get clogged up and cause problems

dont know if theres a in-tank one, but as far as i would think, no. usually its either a external filter on the gas line like MK1, or vehicles with in-tank fuel pumps may have the filter with them in the gas tank.

excellent... thank you. it'll be next week before i have time to look at it again... but the little strainer "bag" at the pump is next. i originally bought this one as a parts car, but if i can get this issue resolved, and locate replacement shifter linkage... the car will drive almost as new. might earn her "slow restoration project" status instead of being a parts donor.
