7mgte ecu
hi, i was told that a ecu with grey plugs goes with a grey conector and vice versa with yellow .my ecu is grey with 26p 16p 22p plugs, nomber 89661-14230a/t it is a 1988-89 ecu, for now every thing is ok, but here is were im confused, my engin harnest has (yellow) connectors for my ecu witch fit in the plugs (GREY),the seller said that the ecu is for this harnest.i look it up and there seams to be some kind of mis match in early 1988 and late 1988, i was wondering if all this is possible ,i heard somme bizare things about 88-89 7mgte, by the way i got a jdm engine, but never saw it run..

Pictures would help. I would also compare your ecu to the two different ecu's, google to find what it looks like. From what I remember and I've only seen one 89+ ecu, there's no way the post 89 plugs would fit in it. My guess is, if it fits... it's probably the correct ecu for the harness.

greay plug ecu/harness combos are year specific. must use an 89 ecu with 89 harness, must use 90 ecu with 90 harness, etc... yeloow plug doesnt matter. 87/88 can be mixed with no issues.

That being said, the actual plugs grey/yellow won't fit in the 'wrong' ECU as they are a different form factor. If the connectors do actually fit the ECU, give it a shot.

could check pin outs in the manual to see if same plugs have different pin placement. ie, pinn 22 on a 90 coulld be pin 19 on a 91. these are examples and not a reflection of actual pin placements.

The 86-89 and 90-92 ECUs have physically different plugs, so you cannot plug in the 'wrong' ECU. If the plugs fit in, it should work.

Well...
This will get you in the ball park,
this will get you the exact year,
this would clear up a lot of the confusion, get in you in the ball park, and possibly get you the exact year.
