Starting troubles!
I'm having problems with my 5m-ge, I just rebuilt the head on it not long ago and put 800 km's on it since the rebuild. I'm having a couple problems with it since, so its probably from me rebuilding it. My main problem its trying to get it to cold start, at first it'll crank like crazy and not fire at all then I'll shut the ignition off and try again. The second time it'll crank sputter and cough, then after a good amount of cranking catch a little and idle at 200 to 500 rpm's want to die for a couple seconds then bounce up to 1300 rpms until warm. Once it gets to cold idle speed its good till I drive it for awhile then it has random Idle speeds between 500-1000 rpm, and dies sometimes if I rev it. Plus its being incredibly hard on fuel and usually runs dog rich when warm.
If anyone can help out that'd be awesome. I'm sure there's already threads on this (I cant find them
) it'd be great if you could post them for me to read through.
Thanks a million guys/gals

I'm just gonna be the one to ask and see if you've double checked your double check of making sure all connectors are hooked up properly with no damaged connectors or moisture in them.
A little detail on if there are any mods to the engine goes a long way as well to help the guru's on here to dissect your issue.
How long was the engine sitting before rebuild was complete and running again? Sounds to me like a bad afm or could be a bad cold start injector which both could cause you to run pig rich and make it hard to start. Try disconnecting the cold start injector and see if it continues to run rich and start rough.
Also check your plugs and see if they're wet after the no start, would show if its flooding and or not firing so it can narrow down the issue.'84 P-type 7mgte 3" turbo back with raptor racing divorced dp, megasquirt 2 v3.57, custom ffim, lightweight flywheel, feramic clutch, 16" eagle alloys, and a few goodies in the works

Seems like a Cold start injector switch fault.
You have too much injection on cold starts, and when the engine is hot, you still have injection of this injector, this is why it's hard on gaz and run pig rich.
The switch could be bad and have an offset in his ohm values.

Or possibly the two temp sensors on the water neck thing got their plugs mixed up?

oh ya sorry about that, well its totally stock and it took me a week to get it running because I only worked on it in little spurts. I double checked every connector, bolt and nut before even turning the key so I know I'm all good there. I looked at every connector before putting it back in its rightful place, one thing I did have trouble with was my dizzy timing; found I had it in the wrong spot but fellow CS owners set me straight on that quickly.
I did take apart my completely intake system for cleaning which included the AFM unit which I tore down and cleaned, but I did that before the head rebuild. So it could be that but I guess I'll look at the cold start injector switch first and work my way back. Could be acouple days before I get the chance to check it out because its dark before I get home and we just got 20 cm of snow.
Thanks for the help guys I'll post back with what I find.

Yeah, that's it. Is the other sensor you're talking about the one under the intake manifold?
