Putting a turbo on a 5MGE???
Im bringing my 83 p type 2.8 back to life. head gasket blew in 2005 and its sat since. anyways i am in the middle of assembling the branny new engine. I got it bored oversize and head machined back to perfection. I had the thought of throwing a turbo on it if it was possible, making it a 5mgte. someone told me it would just shred up my back end and screw crap up. whats your take on it. probably not the first person to ask this....

Building a 5m-gte is a lot more work than just throwing a turbo on. But if you are looking for a project and have the patience and do your research there are many ways to do it. I just finished my 5mgte build this summer and im really impressed with its output, even without a professional tune. 84ptype did a great compilaton of 5mgte writeups that is stickied in the m-series turbo section. Lots of great info to be had. I noticed youre in PG which is pretty close to me (FSJ), I have lots of 5m parts kicking around so if you need anything for your build, just ask. most of my parts are just taking up space. Also, I learned a lot about what it takes to turbo a car never designed for forced induction so if you have any questions, I'd like to share my experience to save you some of the headaches I encountered. All that being said, a freshly built, well running 5mge is still a fairly snappy motor for a street car. Good luck with whatever you decide.

If you cannot find the info on here on how to turbo a 5mge, do not worry about putting a turbo on a 5mge......

And this was a rather mild response. No, you're not the first to ask. More like the 10,000th. Many of us old-timers get annoyed at the question because its been asked so often. Yes, it can be done and has been done successfully by probably dozens of people. There's a whole section on this forum dedicated to the subject's discussion, but I'll advise you that you need to spend a few weeks sifting through EVERY post because you can't believe everything you read on the internet. What sounds like a good idea in a 2003 post you'll read on and find out in a 2005 post that it was not such a good idea because the engine blew up. While its been done successfully by dozens, probably hundreds have tried unsuccessfully and that's why you hear people say that you shouldn't do it for all sorts of various reasons.

Previous poster (pdupler) has one of the original, extensive turbo write ups that tons of Mk2 Supra guys (including myself) referenced when booosting their 5m/6m engines. I did a write up as well, but that page / site is long dead and gone. If you want to make it easy on yourself, I offer a full kit for the car. If you're not a fabricator, and don't wish to tool up to learn, you can buy various bits and pieces from me. Hell, you can buy the whole kit if you want!

^ Yes. Search, check out FAQ. I am debating going 5mgte vs 7m or Jz. But I think I will get my 5m cleaned up and running good.
