It's highly likely they are standard thread. The only connection on the MK2 I recall as being odd is the small fitting on the evaporator.
    It's metric.

Does this kit improve upon the stock set-up (blows colder air), or is it intended to bring the old system back to like-new condition?

Just to be clear, it's a complete replacement from firewall to compressor. From your description, it sounds like you have a time capsule MK2.

Vent temps are roughly the same as an R12 car.

I have two MK2's, one with R12 and the other with this kit. Both average about 40F vent temperature with 85F outside temp and average humidity.

A few have reported the R134a kit vent temps as low as 36F.

I am interested in one but I already have the compressor and if I am reading the posts correctly a 5m kit does not have the option to exclude the compressor. is that correct? If I can use my existing compressor will the OEM compressor hose connections still work? Also will the fan connect to the old bracket?

The 5/6/7M kits include a new Seltec compressor. It's not setup to use the factory compressor.

The new condenser/fan assembly is a complete swap for the factory condenser/fan.

What are the differences between the 5M and 7M kits? I would imagine that I have a mixed bag of 5M and 7M oem a/c parts on my car now (but not fabricated and hooked up to run) as it is an original 5M equipped car that now has a 7M swapped in.

The only difference between the 5/6M and 7M kits is the Seltec compressor pulley. 5/6M has a single v-groove. 7M has a ribbed pulley.
