Starting Engine

This doesn't happen all the time but sometimes when I go to start my engine it doesn't start the first time around. It has that "click" noise as when the alternator goes bad but after I put the key in the off position and crank it again it starts. Scares me sometimes when I'm out somewhere and it doesn't turn over. The alternator was just replaced so I don't think that's it. What could be the cause of this? Would cleaning the battery connectors do anything? :?

My Legend was having the same issue, and after cleaning the battery connectors, and all the grounding wires I could find, fixed the issue...
first thing to try IMO, its Free, easy, and could be the cause

The click noise is usually caused by dirty connections to your battery cables and/or your starter. A bad alternator will not cause the click but a discharged battery or a starter going bad will. My suggestion is to first clean up the battery terminals and make sure the battery to body ground is good. I would also attempt to see how dirty or corroded the starter is. Its barely visible under the intake on the rear of the engine. Maybe take some brake cleaner and spray it off. If none of that helps and the problem is still around take your car to an autozone or advanced auto parts and get an electrical check out done for free. If your battery is still good then the starter is the culprit.

The problem maybe that the contacts at the back of the solenoide of your starter motor have had it. These are two copper 90degree bent contacts, you can make them your self or by them from an auto electrician. It is very easy to replace.

Once you here the click, it progresses to get worse and then the starter motor will have no contact at all. :x

You just unscrew the end cap and have a look in, you will see straight away if the contacts are over!!

My 84 Mk2 had the same problem and sound, after i disassembled the starter, i found out, that the bearing at the end of the starter solenoid axle was crushed, and the balls from the bearing was running freely around and sometimes jammed the starter gear. I went around it for some time by tapping lightly on the starter solenoid with a hammer.
If it is the bearing it only cost about 8-10$
