Head Unit Install
Any DIN or Double DIN radio will fit in
the dash with very little trouble. You will need a few parts and info
about these parts first.
1. Wiring Harness
I highly recommend using a METRA wiring harness (part #70-1398). With
this harness you will not have to cut and ruin the clean Toyota wiring.
The harness should cost around $10 USD, a small fee for a much cleaner,
and easier install.
2. Mounting Kit
You do not need a kit to install an aftermarket radio into the MK2. Instead
you need the factory Toyota metal brackets off the OEM radio.
3. Additional Parts
If you are installing a single DIN radio, you will need to order a Toyota
factory pocket (part #55521-16010) that fits directly below where you
are going to mount the aftermarket headunit to fill in the area that will
be void.
The Install:
Removing the OEM Radio
Remove the heater control buttons, they pull straight off their respective
arms.
Remove the 3 Phillips head screws on the face of
the heater control panel.
Remove the heater control panel, pull straight off, should be very loose
now that the screws are missing. This will reveal two more screws at both
top corners of the rubbery black radio surround (RBRS).
Remove the two screws.
Remove the ashtray. This will reveal the four screws in the RBRS.
Remove the four screws.
Remove the RBRS. You will need to unclip the harness for the cigarette
lighter and A/C switch. Once the RBRS is out of the way, you will see
four silver or gold screws, two on each side of the OEM radio hold those
much needed metal factory brackets.
Remove the four screws.
Remove the radio. You will need to unplug the harness, and the antenna
plug on the back of the OEM radio.
Preparing the Aftermarket Radio for ISO DIN use
First thing we need to do with the aftermarket radio, is open up the install
manual, and see what you need to remove to make it an ISO DIN install.
I know you will need to remove the radios outside trim panel that surrounds
the radio, as well as any parts that hold the metal cage around the radio.
You will not be using the aftermarket radios metal cage.
Use of the Factory Toyota Metal Brackets
Now that we have the OEM radio out, you need to remove the screws holding
the factory Toyota metal brackets on the OEM radio, save the screws.
Place these in the respective order back
onto the aftermarket radio. If you have trouble lining them up with
the screw holes on the aftermarket radio, the brackets are labeled R for
right and L for left for reference.
If you are installing the single DIN radio
you will need to install the pocket below the radio at this time. You
most likely need to trim the two little tabs at the top corners of the
pocket. If they are not removed it leaves a little gap in between the
radio and the pocket. They are only there to fit into the Toyota factory
radios, they are NOT visible once installed, there or not.
You will most likely be using the screws
that held the metal factory brackets on the OEM radio. If they do not
tread into the aftermarket radio, the correct screws should have came
with the aftermarket radio, look in the box.
You should have everything physically together. If you have any problems
please feel free to Email Me.
The Wiring
95% of the popular aftermarket Radio wiring will EXACTLY match up with
the colors of METRA wiring harness. You might have a few wires left on
either of the units, that are not connected to each other.
If you get confused, The METRA wiring
harness, and the aftermarket radio will have a description of what each
wire goes to, Just match up the descriptions.
If you are missing manuals, and get stuck,
just Email Me with the exact
model of radio, and I will search my database and send you the information.
Done
That should be it, Installation of the
radio is reverse of removal. Just a reminder so you do not have
to take the radio out again:)
Don't forget to plug 4 things
in.
The A/C harness.
The cigarette lighter harness
The newly wired METRA harness
