\r\ntwo differential types available
\r\nlimited slip = 2 wheels spin
\r\nopen = only one wheel turns
\r\n
\r\n
\r\nNow that you know that much, your 83 P type Supra should have a 4.10 limited slip differential with 7.5" ring gear. Your best bet would be to go to a junkyard, as these babies cost $1,300 new from Toyota (last I heard)
\r\n
\r\nYou will need to look at the donor cars data plate under the hood to find out what gear ratio it has, you should be loooking for a F293

\r\n i have a 84 l type (i think) and i put a new LSD in it out of u-pull-ti last year. the car i got it out of had not motor, tranny, dash, flares, hardly anything so i dont know what type it was and i couldnt tell the year other then a MKII. how cant i check what ratio my LSD is? is it printed somewhere (other then the engine bay of the donor car) or do i need part numbers?\r\n

Did you happen to count the teeth on both the ring and pinion gears? If not, spinning the pinion around until the axle hub makes one complet revolution works also.\r\n

only thing you can do to a non lsd diff to make it lock is to weld it, which isnt recomended at all. your turning radius will completely suck and the car wont handle properly.\r\n

I know this thread is kinda old (just Skimming) but I have to agree with you on the welding part, but my spare rear end which i run most of the time for MPGs is a 3.73 open diff from and \'82 L type, I welded it BC I can\'t stand a one wheel peel and my turning radius did decrease but I didn\'t notice any difference in handling... Now on the down side of this mod it is very harsh on drivetrain compenents when turning slow and kind of a PITA so I really wouldn\'t reccomend it.\r\n

BTW this is an automatic mk2 celicasupra. thanks...\r\n

\r\n No, it doesn\'t hurt to have extra....but that extra will end up spewing out the breather and coating the underside of the car!! Ask me how I know...my mechanic put in a full two quarts!!...after I gave him the diff sheets from the TSRM!! Oh well....no harm done...just a bloody mess!!

\r\n The correct way to fill the pumpkin is to mount it on the car first. Make sure it is level. A rack is great for this. Remove the plug and fill until it starts to run out of the plug hole. Isnt that easy? B&M use to sell a really good LSD oil. I think Lucas sells something too.\r\n

\r\n You can buy all the parts from Toyota to rebuild, but why would you. Much better to spend a little more and get a Truetrac\r\n

\r\n Ok I know this may sound stupid or uninformed but I have a few questions.
    \r\n
\r\n1. I get a really bad whine noise comming from the rear of the car, I\'m in the process of changing out seals and bearings in the Diff but I have a nasty feeling I\'m wrong about the bearings being bad. The seals I know were shot because the Diff leaked like a stuck pig.
    \r\n
\r\n2. Could the Inner Wheel Bearings be what is making my noise? If so how do I get to them considering the Chiltons book tells me nothing about getting to them or greasing them?
    \r\n
\r\na P.M. or a reply on this thread would be a very big help.
\r\nI\'m hoping to get this done by the end of the weekend.\r\n

\r\nif the rear is whining it is likely the pinion bearing that is the culprit, its the big one thats pressed onto the pinion shaft. from the inside. you can try changing fluid and using a good synthetic, but if its bad it wont make a diff and it will stay.\r\n

That LSD is not going to fit into your diff. Try searching for the ring gear size of both the car you own and the car that diff goes in.\r\n

    \r\n Hi Guys,
    \r\nI have a quick question:
\r\nI\'ve got a grinding noise in the rear end of my car,it doesn\'t make the noise when the car is on jacks and running in gear.It only does it with the weight on the wheels while driving and I just had the rear wheel bearings replace today, any ideas? Also, this one is posi.
    \r\n
    \r\nThanks,Steve\r\n

\r\n Steve, I suggest that you start a new thread for your inquiry.
\r\nI guess it still grinds after the bearing removal ?
\r\nIf the car sits on ground, and you just push it, does it grinds too ?\r\n

\r\n Hey guys the name is Michael
\nI got a 1984 p-type supra it was my brothers from high school I am 17 a junior in high school now.
\nHe said I could have it if i fix it, it leaks a little oil and I changed the alt. But he said it makes a grinding noise in the rear so i put it Up on the hoist.... and first of all the under body is CLEAN!!!
\nbut I assumed wheel bearings where bad i shook the tires they are solid no wiggling.
\nThen I drained dif fluid and there was metal shavings in it and it makes lots of noise in the car while driving. It is a grinding noise and a slight da da da da to it. guessing the dif is bad ?
\nBut me being an arrogant 17 year old already bought bearings for it .. so how do i get a new dif for it? ..... is there any aftermarket ones?..... whats your guys suggestion
\nIt has 207,000 miles on it and looks like it has 100,000 body is really clean ... but since I got the bearings i think after 207,000 miles the bearings should be changed
    \n
\nI assume My brother did a fair share of donuts in it back in the day and burning the tires.
    \n
\nIts funny cause the car gets to relive its glory days.... its like a jock who graduated high school and still wheres his Lettermans jacket but graduated in 2002. But it is sitting in the same high school parking lot it did 9 years ago. ahahaha
    \n
\nI have a lot of respect and passion for this old supra.... i put all new fluids in it and new headlights my brother hadn\'t drove it in the last 4 years and it sat in his carport.
    \n
\nI park it in my front lawn and turn the tires so it looks like it is on display ....ahahaha\r\n
