NICE! thanks Mark this will come in handy when its 20 degrees tomorrow (10/26/11) now i wont have to drive to your work and bother you until next time i need some thing :D

Mark I have some NOS MK2 heater hoses/bypass hoses in the garage + 5yrs old , how old is too old sitting on shelf?? with no UV exposure...

#40 ·
Wow, what a great thread, but what an OLD thread!!! I don't know how to work this forum too well yet, so I probably am breaking some sort of rule by asking a question on a 10-year-old thread..... my deep apologies, in advance!!!

But I'm in a fix because none of the heater hoses are available anymore for my '85 MKII. I have a question I haven't seen answered on this thread:

I am about to cross the desert with my '85 P-type M/T, and still have the original 32-year-old heater hoses at the firewall (four of them). I replaced the "suicide" bypass hose a few years back. The firewall hoses still look solid, BUT:

Can anyone tell me the inside diameter of the four firewall hoses, highlighted in GREEN in the 10th picture? I want to take some bulk heater hose with me in case of an emergency, but there's no way I'm going to take one of these original hoses loose to measure!!!!

87246A 87245-1B030 Hose, Heater (DISCONTINUED)
87246E 87245-1B070 Hose, Heater (DISCONTINUED)

Appreciate any help and maybe I'll have to start my own thread? I'm not sure of the rules with an old thread like this......

Thanks :)

ARRRRGH! THANKS! :thumbsup:I went to Rock Auto but I went to "Celica Supra" on the drop-down menu - -- - and nothing there- --- it didn't occur to me to look under Celica. Such is the mantra I always use to parts guys when they look at me crosswise: "It's not a Celica - it's not a Supra - - -it's a CELICA SUPRA!!!"

I'm still looking to find the ID of the hoses, because I'm fixing to drive crosscountry and likely don't have time to wait for Rock Auto, so I want to bring some bulk hose with me.......

ETA: So I'm seeing various inside hose diameters on the Rock Auto site. Looks like maybe 5/8" is a good middle ground to buy some bulk hose?

#43 ·
Yeah, the way the parts are indexed there can throw you until somebody tells where to look.

5/8" seems to be one of the sizes. I think the listing for all the hoses they have gives the I.D., but I didn't look too hard.

AutoZone and O'Reilly also have hoses listed. Maybe a local store might have them. There's one HUGE O'Reilly here in SoCal that seems to always have stuff that my closest store doesn't stock.

Dr Jim, I really do appreciate your answers! Very helpful to point me in the right direction.

So I just got back from O'Reilly, and they have only one hose available - the Gates 18738. I took it out in the parking lot and found that it's an imperfect - but usable with some trimming - substitute for the lower heater hose (I'm not conversant yet in the exact terms, but it's the lower one of the pair near the firewall that looks to be connected with a metal union, and is the closest one to the exhaust manifold.)

This hose would have been usable for the upper hose of the pair, but it's 3-4" too short.

I printed screenshots of all the RockAuto hoses, but none of them (aside from the aforementioned 18738, and the "suicide hose" which I don't need because I already replaced it) bear any resemblance to the ones on the car. All the curves go the wrong direction, and I'd be better off using bulk hose than trying to force a molded hose the wrong way because it would pinch worse.

So I bought the Gates 18738 available, as it's closest to the heat source exhaust manifold, and I guess I'll bring a length of 5/8" bulk hose.

The hoses seem so bulletproof, but they're so old and the desert is so hot, especially while running A/C ! :faint:

Is that the two-piece heater hose that has the metal coupling in it?

One of the guys I met at Supras in Vegas last year clued me in to the fact that there's a Toyota truck heater hose that's an exact replacement that yo install without the metal coupling. It has to be trimmed a bit, but the basic molded shape is exactly what's needed to replace that two-piece hose.

Let me see if I can get the part number from him....

Thanks Jim - I bought the one you suggested for the Sequoia and it looks like a winner! I'm going to keep the Gates 18738 I mentioned above (it fits the lower half of the two-piece hose) in the trunk because:

1. That lower half hose is the closest to the exhaust manifold, and so would be a good candidate for the first one to fail, and therefore:

2. Should either the lower or upper half fail, the Sequoia one-piece hose would be an excellent emergency road replacement because that way I would not have to disturb the hose ends at the junction between the two halves while dealing with steam on the side of the road, and could then later at my leisure CAREFULLY replace the blown half with minimum flexion disturbance to the other hose. I say this because the original hoses seem to be of such high quality that I would be tempted to leave the half that didn't blow....

this one?

You can use silicone heater hoses. it's VERY flexible and will not kink. Your choice of colors.
Gates GREEN STRIPE is also excellent.I used that for suicide hose and double clamped it.

Did you have trouble burping the system?
I did always until I installed a garden hose connection. The high spot.

I don't think I'd trust ebay silicone hoses for coolant. I've had a lot of problems with their vacuum hoses falling apart quickly. Plus they kink very easily

#57 ·
I bought a "complete kit" of silicone hoses from eBay. I haven't installed them yet, and probably won't until we get to Colorado, when I'll do the new fuel injectors, fuel filter, starter and alternator, along with the timing belt, tensioner, and all the other belts and hoses.

#58 ·
I just used the silicone heater hoses from them.
The top and bottom hoses are NAPA parts.
I used radio controlled "gas hoses" for vacuum lines. VERY high quality. Nitro methane proof and very flexible. See the photo.

I'm looking at ordering new vacuum hoses and i am a bit unsure what diameter to go for. Is it 3 or 4mm? I replaced most of the hoses about a year ago but i am not quite satisfied with the result. They are very stiff and they sit very loose on the connections and i suspect they might leak a bit there. I used 4 mm vacuum hoses then.
