Holding the door handle to have the locks stay engaged is normal for 80's Toyotas. It was a feature so you wouldn't lock your keys in the car.

That makes absolutely no sense to me! How do you "hold the lock in order to lock the car"?
Anyway, my '84 locks by inserting the key into the keyhole in the handle, and turning it counterclockwise on the driver's side, but opposite, or clockwise on the passenger door. In both cases, you are moving the top of the key towards the front of the car. Using the key to unlock the driver's side only unlocks the driver's door, the passenger door stays locked. If you unlock the passenger door, the power door lock feature also unlocks the driver's door.

And J.R. is correct, if you wish to lock the door using the locking handle on the inside, then you have to hold the outside handle up while closing the door.

You should add a few more photos of the interior, and a few of the rear of the car as well. A prospective purchaser will want to know if the dash is intact, and if the hatch shows any rust along the bottom.

A friend had a MKII when they were new, but it was stolen. He keeps saying he should look for another. Since you are just across the Delaware River from us, I will let him know that you have a MKII for sale.

The locks are funky. I haven't figured them out yet. When I drove down the street and hit a bumpy road the locks would unlock then lock again.
