1985 Supra, blown engine.

I have an 1985 supra but the engine blew. A piston shot a hole through it, apparantly it needs the whole nine yards to go again. My old mechanic (who only works on Celias and Supras) found a new engine with 80,000 miles on it (mine only had 125,000) for $1000, but he's in FL and I'm in Mass. Plus it would be $1200 for labor he says (which is way more than I have ever spent on a car even to buy it). Is it worth it to ship the car to FL from up here (around $700 is the best I can find for a nonop car) and then invest another $2200 into it for a new engine? Is that even a good deal for a "new" engine? I know that the Toyo dealer up here told me $5,000 and labor up here is much more expensive... The body is in good shape (it was garage-kept before I owned it) but the a/c doesn't work and the interior is a little worse for the years (though amazingly, everything else on it still works fine, including the alarm, which I set off about 20 times. I don't know much about cars, but I do really like this one, until the engine went it was the best car I have ever owned. Yet everyone seems to think putting a new engine in it is a waste of time (except, of course, my mechanic!) and money since it is 18 years old.

try ASAP motors in Texas, they seem to have decent deals, my mechanic here usually charges about 500 to R&R a motor, 1200 would seem excessive for the job, but hey, I live in Arkansas.......

A blown engine is a perfect excuse for an upgrade. 2JZ perhaps?

I was thinking about a new engine and such... japan direct quoted me $795 usd plus shipping for a 6m with 30k miles on it.

just thought I'd let you know :wink:

:shock: as much as i would agree with you norbie, but i dont think the this guy has as much knowledge and support as you have :wink:

those prices sound like too much for a used engine. If i were you go with a 6MGE

I really don't know much about cars. I called the place, told them what I had, they found a "replacement" for $1000 from a junkyard or some such. How does one go about "upgrading" their engine? Can I just order it online or something? And then, I suppose, have it delivered to the mechanic? It's times like these I wish I knew more about cars.

Exactly. Contact Ray, he can work everything out for you. Your mechanic can just throw in the 6m in place of the 5m.
