Yes you can, but the Z series motors are designed for low end torque. Would not respond well to mods, unless you are willing to do extensive head and cam work.

Anything can be done in pursuit of performance. It's the old question, how fast do you want to spend?

1UZ is the hard way, IMHO. Not sure if the U series would bolt up to our trannies.

350 GM would be faster quicker cheaper if you wanted a V8.

I like the all aluminum construction and low weight. I wonder if it weighs about the same as 7m?

Anything is possible with the trannies, maybe an adapter plate.

If I wanted a Chev V8, I'd buy a 89+ Vette. 2 seats, 6 speed... fun car, though reliability is questionable. A few friends have owned them and swore they would never buy another.

V8 in MarkIII...... Why not in a MKII?
There is a guy here in NewZealand who is just finishing his 1UZ into a Mk II. It's been stripped back to bare metal and fully repainted, and now it's in the re-assembly stage. He was building it with a water-to-air i/cooled supercharger but is now considering twin turbo.....

Oh, I meant why not fit in a MKII as well as a MKIII. Would it fit? But if a 350 fits it should be no probs.

Sloopercat your points were well taken. It's just another option for everyone out there.

Totmad. I saw that last night. Interesting.

What would be cool is to make a common block and crank for a pair of 7MGTEs, 1JZs or 2JZs. V12 twin or quad tubo. Crazier things have been done. The English love these kinds of projects.

I just think it's nuts to use anything other than a 7MGTE, if you want reliable, relatively easy transplant material. With mods easily available, the HP is there to compete with almost any other engine you would consider.

I would definitely miss the sweet sound of the six. I think that is part of the charm of these cars.

Just my opinion. It's what I decided to do. To each his own.

why? who needs over 200rwhp? Not everyones defination of fun is getting down the 1/4 mile in under 12 seconds. I'm having tons of fun with my lightly modded 5m, another 20 hp and this car will be a riot. The beauty of this swap is you save 80 to 100 pounds off the front of the car instead of adding them. So many people complain about the handling of their 7mgte mk2s here. My mk2 is super stable and perfectly controlable. From what I've heard so far, an uncorked 1uzfe sounds awesome! But still, for me its got to be an inline 6 to be a supra.

There is a lot to be said for the 1uz/mkII swap, even in stock form. Smooth, quiet, better weight distribution, no BHG issues, no cankcase evac issues, lotsa low and midrange torque, no need to go to higher gears or to bring the boost up,... and about the same power as a BPU'd 7MGTE.
And there's nothing wrong with the sound of a well tuned V8!
I'd say it's a great swap alternative, Considering you don't have to do ANYTHING special to it to make it live. (MHG, hand lapped deck, ARP studs/bolts etc.)
Speed parts and custom machine work get real $pendy real fast!

Exacty and if you want more there is room to grow. The old addage that "there is no substitute for cubic inches" is so true.

I've seen Pete's V8 Supra up close and personal, and it's a very nice machine. It used to have a 7M-GTE with a T04 and lots of other goodies, and he knew the car would be a fair bit slower with the V8, but he wasn't looking to go faster. He wanted something a bit different, something smooth, reliable and fuel efficient (a 7M is none of those things), and something with lots of upgrade potential should the need for speed arise!

Unfortunately the engine bay is too cramped width-wise to make turbocharging practical (the manifolds are a very tight fit), but supercharging is a possibility and 1UZ's are known to make ridiculous amounts of power with forced induction. Even as a relatively stock engine though it moves along very nicely - maybe not as fast as a tweaked 7M, but certainly no slouch either!

FWIW the MkII has more room between the strut towers, so a 1UZ swap shouldn't be too difficult. I wish I had the time/money to give it a try, I reckon it would be sweet!
