As Norbie said on the Toymods forum to other people dude....

"There is not point polishing a turd"

Seriously, Allan went mad on his 5ME and only ended up with about 80hp at the wheels, not worth it...

Someone on the Yahoo list in AUS (can anyone remember Kevin's last name), I believe tried turbo'ing his 5ME... Only to have a BHG occur TWICE after the conversion. I "think" he went 6M after this.

It's doable, but then it's just a matter of time before the motor craps out.

Because of this, I'm leaving the 5ME in my 81 MKI alone. The head has been retorqued already (from 55 ft lbs to 61 ft lbs, and one head bolt was discovered to be loose), so I'm hoping that this will make my motor behave for quite awhile. :p

I agree w/ the others. It's doable, but why bother.... Go 6M.

Like the 7M, the 5ME also has a nasty BHG habit, and it's just as frequent. The 4ME, 5MGE & 6MGE's are the motors that seem to behave well

If its Kevin Allan you're talking about, he went rebuilt 5MGE and then turned it into a 5MGTE...he managed to offload the 5MTE to some person who reckoned they could make it work...

I was reading a guy from WA's (aus) site today, and apparently he had stuffed up two head gaskets on his 5mgte converted supra. I was really looking into making my soarer that i just bought a few days ago turbo, the head gasket is blown, so it needs a full recon, im pondering whether to just go 1jz, or maybe even 7mgte. I want about 200rwhp at least from whatever i get, and a stock 1jz should give me about that. But then again, i think the stock NA 7mgeu puts out 200hp.. with some work, im sure i could get it putting out 250+hp at the motor. eck, im confused now :p

That's if you can find a good 6M ... they're becoming scarece in Aus. these days. Still, it is the best bang for buck option. Other option is getting a low km 5MGE out of a Cressida - there's a few of them around still - and at reasonable prices. Or you could go 7MGTE or 1JZGTE. Good luck with whatever you do!

Hey

I live in Aust, i own a 85' celica supra. Its got a 5M-E, i was woundering where you could find 6M?

I've got a 2.5" mandrel bend exhaust and a Flying Performance MAX POWER N1 Muffler. Moded AFM, And AAA Power Stack Air Filter. It goes well and sounds nice.

FYI- I had a 5M-E in my car when I bought it. It ran horribly, and I never even bothered to figure out why. A 5M-GE or 6M-GE is a DIRECT swap in, with just a little bit of finegaling with the stock wiring harness. Mine runs great using the original computer, a US spec '82 AFM, '82 distributor with vacuum canister, and a huge cheap cone filter. If you go thru with this swap, feel free to send me an email with any questions! HTH.

Bah. I like my turd. ;) (Prolly the only one on this forum) :) It's easy to work with. You don't adjust the valves that often really. ;)

Pre-megasquirt numbers for my MA61 5M-E with 2.5" exhaust and cold-air mods.
16.38 quarter mile and 0-62mph (0.100km) time of 8.6s. The engine has 112k miles (180k km) (and the car is not lightened ;))

This with an engine that peaks its hp at 4800rpm and torque at 3600rpm.

Am I the only one that remembers that Kevin Allan used two stock 4M? (3mm smaller bore??) headgaskets? (to lower compression, he suffered from severe detonation) Come on.. that won't work well... And he had no real timing managment so it was real slow of the line.

I have bought an Eaton M62 supercharger that is going to be bolted onto the ol' 5M-E. I'll keep you posted of my progress. ;)

I'd be interested to see how the supercharger works out... I wonder if any one on this forum has supercharged their supra?

My memory failed me a bit, apparently Kevin used some kind of schims (copper?) together with a conventional gasket.

Is Kevin on this forum? He could tell us some more.

Some excerpts from The Kevin Allan 5M-E turbo story. :)
(There's more, but I don't have time to search yahoo manually hehe)

I would try to use a slightly modified 2mm steel headgasket for a 7M-GTE. Lowers compression to around 8.1:1. Alternatively O-ring the block and use a stock gasket if possible. O-rings together with a copper gasket is also a solution that would hold for some serious cylinderpressures.

A highly modded 5M-TE with about 500 flywheel hp: :) 8)

I saw an SC kit for the mk2 on ebay a while back, there was some discussion about it and it was decided that it wouldnt really work, kind of a homemade deal. Something about it wasnt matched to the engine rpm correctly. Im sure someone can fill in the details.

I'm interested to know what the real top speed of the 5M-E is...I don't suppose anyone knows this? I mean, the fastest I've gone is 155kph or there abouts and it wouldn't go any higher...I was just wondering if this is the real limit of the engine or just the limit the computer has set...hmm.

I would of liked it to at least get up to 180kph...D'oh. :(

Kev's car was about as quick with a healthy 5MGE as it ever was with the 5ME. A lot more reliable too.
Seriously, I know only of a few of people who have bothered to go to town on the 5ME and they've all regretted it.

Hey,

regarding the 5M-E top speed, i've done 160kmph when passing another car fairly easy, i reckon i could've pushed it further probably 170-180kmph. Is your 5M-E a five speep manuel?

Hmm, no mine is a 4-speed Auto...maybe the manual's go 10 - 20 kph faster?

I had mine pegged at 155kph for a good 20 seconds and it would not go any higher...

I just wanted to know if there is a safe top speed higher than that which this engine can do. 155kph is so low!! :(

oh, ok

Mine used to be a four speed auto, but was converted to a five speed manuel by the previous owner, who is a mechanic.

I spose the fifth gear gives you that extra top speed, as the ratios are further apart.
