5m Still wont run!!

Help! I still haven't gotten my 83 ptype running, it's been over 2 months now... It turns over fine, it just won't start, i've tried starting fluid, and it ran, then, but only for a few seconds.. I'm assuming that's a problem with the fuel then.. When i got the car it sat for 5 years, but was started at least once a year each year, but the previous year, he said it woulnd't start, it turned over fine, but wouldn't start. I got it home and drained the bad gas, filled with new, and bought a new fuel pump for it, because the old one was bad. Still no help. I've taken the injectors out and cleaned them all, along with the fuel rail and intake manifold, all to no avail. I'd really appreciate any help at all, i've got two days off this week, and i'm REALLY hoping to get the car running! I love this car, it looks bad-ass! Thanks guys!

Have you checked out your coil and ignitor assembly yet? If the coil went out somewhere along the line, It will crank strong as long as the battery will hold up but will never start. Fairly easy to check it electrically to see it they are still good.

I am assuming of course that you have already checked the timing belt as well.

You said it started with starting fluid, so it sounds like you have spark, but no fuel. If the car sat that long, I would definitely replace the fuel filter. The injectors may also be all gunked up.
My car kept turning but didn't start...check the coil and ignitor...thats what was wrong with mine 8)
My '82 Redpra P-type did the same damn thing!
We dumped the gas tank changed the fuel filter and it tried to start, but just wouldn't!

Make sure your timing belt is tight and in time, make sure plugs are clean, make SURE you're getting the right amount of fuel pressure, make sure there is nothing obstructing the intake, check your relays too! If the EFI or Main relay is bad, it will do the same thing, try to start but won't

We never figured out what was wrong w/ my Redpra and she is now a case of Dr.Pepper, I hope you have WAY better luck
ok, it runs with starting fluid so why do people keep saying check the coil, ignitor, and the timing? :twak: if it didnt have spark it wouldnt run with starting fluid.

anyway, to get to your problem, have you changed the fuel filter? if not, you'll want to do that, but before you connect the line to the bottom of the fuel filter, i would jump the 2 wire check connector for the fuel pump that is by the afm. then turn the key to on and you should get fuel pumping out. if it looks nasty, then let it run into a drain pan till the gas looks clean. then hook everything back up and it should run.

i had the same problem with my 5m. check the resistance on the pickup coils in the distributor. mine just went out one day. no real reason. crank it a lil bit then look with a flachlight down the exhaust pipe. if you see a white smoke in there it's getting fuel but no spark. that's what mine was like.
arg, he has spark!

Most likely in the fuel system somewhere. You've cleaned injectors and everything else, so the obvious question is fuel filter? also do the injectors themselves work? hrm...How is oil/flow?
no offense DKJones96 but did you completely disregard what he said in his post? and then ignore mine? he has spark. not all isssues with no start are spark.

Starting fluid is easier to ignite than gas (Thats why we use it to get the car started, BTW). The ignitor could be weak and giving enough spark to light the starting fluid but not have enough spark temp to light the gas. Just a possibility.
Try shorting the fuel pump check connector, turn the ignition switch On, and see if you can hear the fuel pump running and fuel flowing through the fuel rail. If so, then your fuel injectors may once again be fouled with crud or not firing for some reason.
Alright guys, THANKS. I've got ALL day tomorrow devoted to this supra :D I'll try and keep this updated as to what works and what doesn't. Thanks again guys!

just an fyi, the ignitor doesnt spark, the coil does. all the ignitor does is trigger the coil. if the signal is weak, the coil still fires 100%, or if its too weak, the coil wont fire at all. so there is either spark, or no spark, no inbetween caused by the ignitor. if the spark is low, it most likey would be due to the wires, as even if the coil was going, spark should be pretty consistent across the board. if the coils resistance is too far out, it wont spark. either way, he isnt getting fuel to the cylinders, and thats the problem. have you ever seen what the gas looks like in a car thats been sitting for 5 years? it turns to a sludgelike substance. and if in a carb(or in this case fuel pump and filter) it leaves hard white deposites that will clog the filter and the pump. he was on the right path changing the pump, but missed the filter. while changing the filter he needs to purge the fuel pressure line of the old nasty gas and he should be good to go.

the computer uses these pickup coils for injector timing too. if it thinks the engine isn't turning it won't inject anything. but after sitting 5 years it's probably just sludge and gel in the gas lines.

EDIT: there are two pickup coils in there. one for the ignition(2 pronged) and injector timing(the one with more). one can go out and the other system will still work. that's how my car injected fuel but didn't fire. an engine could also fire but not inject. but if you ask it'll throw you an error code.
