ok, it runs with starting fluid so why do people keep saying check the coil, ignitor, and the timing? :twak: if it didnt have spark it wouldnt run with starting fluid.

anyway, to get to your problem, have you changed the fuel filter? if not, you'll want to do that, but before you connect the line to the bottom of the fuel filter, i would jump the 2 wire check connector for the fuel pump that is by the afm. then turn the key to on and you should get fuel pumping out. if it looks nasty, then let it run into a drain pan till the gas looks clean. then hook everything back up and it should run.

Starting fluid is easier to ignite than gas (Thats why we use it to get the car started, BTW). The ignitor could be weak and giving enough spark to light the starting fluid but not have enough spark temp to light the gas. Just a possibility.
just an fyi, the ignitor doesnt spark, the coil does. all the ignitor does is trigger the coil. if the signal is weak, the coil still fires 100%, or if its too weak, the coil wont fire at all. so there is either spark, or no spark, no inbetween caused by the ignitor. if the spark is low, it most likey would be due to the wires, as even if the coil was going, spark should be pretty consistent across the board. if the coils resistance is too far out, it wont spark. either way, he isnt getting fuel to the cylinders, and thats the problem. have you ever seen what the gas looks like in a car thats been sitting for 5 years? it turns to a sludgelike substance. and if in a carb(or in this case fuel pump and filter) it leaves hard white deposites that will clog the filter and the pump. he was on the right path changing the pump, but missed the filter. while changing the filter he needs to purge the fuel pressure line of the old nasty gas and he should be good to go.
