but you end up with the exact same thing, a 5m head with 7m bottom IS a 6m. If you can get the 7m bottom for way cheaper and you have the pistons you need already, how can it hurt? Its best to change the rings on any 6m you get anyways. The only other extra expense is you have to have your 5m pulley machined to fit the crank I believe. However, if you have neither and it costs close to the the same then always go for the actual 6m as it is less work if you would rather just drop the motor in.

Crank pulley is the tough part, its a unique part to the 6M. 5M won't work directly and the 7M has a different belt configuration. This stuff has been beaten to death in the past.

If you are gonna due this set-up might as well get a 6M crank pulley cause it is a pain in the ass to machine that pulley and you would not have enough meet left on the 5M pulley... I have done this on a joint 5M/7MGTE turbo engine and we are still on search or a 6M pulley for I am not for sure if that pulley will stay long enough to be strong.

Hi guys,

I also am doing the 7M/5M combo but I am boring out the block. I need oversized 5M pistons (84 and up 9.2 compression) preferably 1.0 or 80 over I believe. If anybody knows where I can find such pistons please let me know.

Thanks for any tips.

You should be able to get +1.0mm pistons from Toyota. I've bought +.5 and the repair manual mentions +1 and +1.5mm.

can i have my 5mge block bored out so i can fit the 7mgte pistons???
Sure, although there really isn't a reason you need to do any boring for them though. The 5/6/7M motors all have the same bore.

so just the 7m pistons will my 2.8 a 3.0??
No, the displacement difference between the 5 and 6/7M is in the stroke not the bore. The 7M pistons biggest difference is in the shape of the top. 7MGTE pistons have a big dish in the top of them. 5M pistons are slightly domed or pretty much flat, with valve cutouts to match the 2 piston head. The bore, piston pin diameter, and piston pin location are all the same between the 5/6/7M pistons. If all you want is a 3L 5M just buy a 6M, much cheaper and easier. HTH
